India’s third-largest telecommunications provider, Vodafone Idea (Vi), has expanded its next-generation wireless footprint in Central India by commercially launching Vodafone Idea 5G services in Sagar, Satna, and Jabalpur.

The latest rollout, officially announced on July 20, 2026, marks a crucial progression in the operator’s network strategy. By extending coverage beyond the initial regional clusters of Bhopal, Indore, and Gwalior, Vi now provides high-speed 5G connectivity across six key urban and industrial centers in Madhya Pradesh. On a national scale, this phase pushes Vi’s active 5G footprint to 225 towns and cities across 17 priority telecom circles.

For millions of subscribers in Central India, this development signifies a long-awaited shift toward high-bandwidth mobile connectivity. It reflects Vi’s strategic pivot following its multi-crore capital raises, translating network investments directly into on-ground tower deployments.

Strategic Targeting: Powering Central India’s Economic Engine

Rather than deploying blanket coverage indiscriminately, Vi’s network engineering teams have prioritized high-density, economically vibrant corridors in Madhya Pradesh. The choice of Jabalpur, Satna, and Sagar highlights a data-led deployment approach aimed directly at regions experiencing surging mobile traffic:

    • Jabalpur: Functions as the judicial and administrative hub of Madhya Pradesh, host to the High Court, defense establishments, and a thriving tourism sector linked to Bhedaghat.
    • Satna: Widely recognized as the “Cement City of India,” it serves as an industrial heavyweight with heavy logistics traffic, mining enterprises, and major pilgrimage transit routes.
    • Sagar: Acts as an essential educational and healthcare nexus in the Bundelkhand region, dominated by university campuses and growing commercial trade.

“We are accelerating the expansion of Vi’s 5G network across Madhya Pradesh as we strengthen our footprint across key markets in the state,” said Kavita Nadkarni, Business Head – Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh at Vodafone Idea. “Our expansion is guided by a clear focus on prioritizing high-demand locations—spanning high data consumption centers as well as areas with significant footfall, including commercial hubs, academic centers, and tourist locations—ensuring a consistent and enhanced network experience for our users.”

Infrastructure and Vendor Alliances: What Powers Vi’s 5G Network?

To power its 5G network across Central India, Vi is leveraging equipment from long-standing global technology partners—Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung.

In Madhya Pradesh, the operator has deployed mid-band 5G spectrum (3.3 GHz to 3.5 GHz) alongside sub-GHz bands for superior indoor wall penetration. Crucially, the telco has integrated AI-powered Self-Organising Network (SON) software across its cell towers. This intelligent layer continuously monitors cell site health, automatically adjusting antenna tilt, power outputs, and traffic handovers in real time to prevent network congestion during peak hours.

Local network testing in Jabalpur’s Civil Lines area and near Sagar University reveals initial download speeds ranging between 280 Mbps and 450 Mbps on mid-range 5G smartphones, offering a noticeable upgrade over congested 4G lanes during evening traffic spikes.

    Tariff Strategy and Subscription Offers

Unlike some competitors who introduced distinct premium tiers for 5G access immediately, Vi is bundling unlimited 5G connectivity into its existing high-value prepaid plans to encourage adoption and limit customer churn.

The operator’s primary push for 5G users in Madhya Pradesh centers around the Vi Non Stop Hero ₹3,749 Annual Pack.

    Plan FeatureOffer Details
    Price₹3,749
    Validity365 Days
Data AllowanceUnlimited 5G Data (where active) + 4G Data fallback
    Voice & SMSUnlimited local/STD calling + 100 SMS/day
Network CompatibilityFlawless auto-switch between 4G and 5G handsets

For prepaid customers on shorter recharge cycles, Vi has also unlocked unlimited 5G data on daily-data plans priced above ₹299, provided users possess a compatible 5G SA/NSA device and reside within active coverage zones.

Industry Analysis: Can Vi Catch Up to Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel?

Vodafone Idea’s 5G rollout across 225 cities represents a vital turn in India’s telecom landscape. However, telecom analysts emphasize that the competitive gap remains wide.

While Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel achieved nationwide pan-India 5G coverage through aggressive capital expenditure between 2022 and 2024, Vi’s 5G rollout was constrained by debt obligations and capital availability. Following its successful ₹18,000 crore Follow-on Public Offer (FPO) and subsequent vendor deal agreements, Vi has entered an aggressive catch-up phase.

“Vi’s strategy isn’t about matching tower-for-tower with Jio or Airtel immediately,” notes telecom analyst and market researcher Rajesh Verma. “Instead, Vi is executing a targeted surgical deployment. By installing 5G equipment specifically in areas with a high density of 5G handsets—like university areas in Sagar or commercial quarters in Jabalpur—Vi maximizes return on capital investment while stemming subscriber loss to rivals.”

Furthermore, field reports indicate Vi has already installed physical 5G equipment in neighbouring regions, such as Raipur in Chhattisgarh, with commercial activation expected in upcoming network phases.

Future Outlook: The Road Ahead for Vi

With 225 towns and cities live, Vi’s immediate priority over the coming quarters centers on expanding indoor network coverage and broadening cell density in tier-2 and tier-3 industrial nodes.

As 5G smartphone prices in India fall below the ₹10,000 threshold, data consumption in regions like Madhya Pradesh is expected to grow by 25–30% annually. Vi’s ability to maintain high network quality using AI-driven SON technology, alongside competitive tariff packaging, will decide whether the operator can convert its 4G base into sticky, high-ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) 5G subscribers.
