According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) telecom subscription data as of July 31, 2023, Bharti Airtel experienced substantial growth by adding 1,517,257 wireless subscribers in July 2023, resulting in a total wireless subscriber base of 375,242,611 (375.24 million). This growth increased Bharti Airtel’s market share in the wireless subscriber segment to 32.74 percent, showing a growth rate of 0.41 percent during the same month.
The total number of wireless subscribers in India also saw an increase, from 1,143.58 million in June 2023 to 1,146.25 million in July 2023, representing a monthly growth rate of 0.23 percent.
In terms of regional performance, Bharti Airtel made strong gains in wireless subscribers across circles, except Kolkata, where it experienced a loss of 8,817 wireless subscribers. Notably, Airtel achieved the highest wireless subscriber addition in the following regions:
Himachal Pradesh: Airtel added 38,776 new customers, taking its total wireless customer base to 3,478,313 (3.47 million).
Karnataka: With 296,230 new customers, Airtel reached a total of 31,873,862 (31.87 million) wireless customers.
Mumbai: Airtel added 54,321 customers, taking it closer to the 10 million milestone with 9,986,070 (9.98 million) wireless subscribers.
Tamil Nadu: Airtel added 207,039 new customers, taking its total wireless customer base in its leadership region to 28,250,863 (28.25 million).
It is noteworthy that these regions where Bharti Airtel has experienced significant subscriber growth are also part of its leadership circle. Additionally, Mumbai is approaching the important milestone of 10 million customers.
Apart from these regions, Bharti Airtel witnessed substantial growth in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (160,741 additions), Bihar (112,091 additions), Rajasthan (105,308 additions), and Madhya Pradesh (102,787 additions) during the same period. Overall, Airtel expanded its wireless subscriber base in 21 out of 22 telecom circles.
Airtel 5G
Airtel’s commitment to 5G initiatives was also highlighted. Airtel was the first telecom operator to launch 5G services in Chennai and launched 5G Reality Check in the city, allowing users to experience Airtel 5G Plus. In Mumbai, the company announced 2 million unique 5G users in May 2023 as the city was one of the first eight to get Airtel 5G Plus.
Airtel Active Subscriber Base
Additionally, Airtel had the highest ratio of active wireless customers with 100.18 percent of active wireless customers (Visitor Location Register or VLR) compared to its total wireless customers (Home Location Register or HLR) on the date of peak VLR in the reported month.
