Musk Says Starlink Will Be Affordable in India as Competition With Jio Heats Up

Elon Musk says Starlink must offer affordable pricing in India to compete with Jio, but no Indian tariff or commercial launch date has been announced.

Elon Musk has said SpaceX will need to price Starlink’s satellite internet service affordably to attract customers in India, bringing pricing into sharper focus as the company prepares to enter a market dominated by low-cost mobile data and expanding broadband networks. However, Musk has not announced an Indian subscription price, installation charge or launch date, and Starlink cannot begin commercial service until it completes the remaining regulatory requirements.

In a post on X on October 10, Musk acknowledged that Indian customers would be unlikely to buy the service if it were too expensive. His comments come amid an increasingly public dispute with Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani over Starlink’s entry into India, while both Starlink and Jio’s satellite communications venture await final security clearance.

Musk Says Starlink Must Be Affordable to Compete

Musk’s latest statement recognises the challenge of entering a market where consumers are accustomed to relatively inexpensive mobile data. Reuters reported that Indian mobile data costs around 8 US cents per GB, making price a significant consideration for any connectivity provider seeking a broad customer base.

Musk said competition would give consumers more choices, arguing that Starlink would have to keep its pricing affordable rather than rely on satellite connectivity alone as a selling point. He did not provide a rupee amount or specify whether affordability would involve lower monthly subscriptions, reduced equipment costs, introductory offers or different packages for households and businesses.

The statement is therefore a pricing commitment in principle, not a tariff announcement. Customers still do not have a confirmed Starlink India price list against which to compare the service with JioFiber, JioAirFiber or other broadband options.

Starlink and Jio Will Serve Different Connectivity Needs

Reliance Jio has built its position in India through affordable mobile connectivity and has expanded into fibre broadband and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). Starlink’s satellite-based model could appeal to customers in remote villages, difficult terrain, islands and other locations where fibre deployment or reliable terrestrial connectivity is limited.

Satellite broadband may also be useful for businesses, infrastructure operators and emergency-response teams that need connectivity beyond conventional network coverage. Musk has highlighted these potential use cases as part of Starlink’s India pitch.

However, the two services should not automatically be treated as direct substitutes. A household with access to affordable fibre or fixed wireless broadband may compare Starlink against those options, while a customer in an underserved location may have fewer alternatives. The value proposition will depend on availability, performance, equipment costs and the monthly price.

Starlink will also need to account for the cost of its customer terminal and installation, where applicable, alongside recurring service charges. A low monthly subscription would not necessarily make the service affordable if the initial equipment expense remained high.

No Starlink India Price or Commercial Launch Date Yet

Despite Musk’s comments, SpaceX has not disclosed a confirmed Indian residential subscription price or a complete commercial package. Customers should be cautious about treating prices reported for Starlink in other countries as a preview of Indian tariffs, because pricing can vary according to local costs, taxes, equipment, competition and service conditions.

Commercial availability is also pending. Starlink has received earlier regulatory approvals, but final security clearance and the remaining requirements for operating in India have not been completed. The government has said that satellite service applicants must meet the applicable conditions before proceeding to commercial operations.

This means Musk’s affordability statement does not indicate that Starlink will launch immediately or that Indian customers can begin subscribing. A launch date, equipment availability, service terms and an official Indian price list remain key details to watch.

Jio’s Satellite Venture Is Also Awaiting Clearance

Jio is developing its own satellite connectivity service, putting it in a position to compete with Starlink in the emerging Indian satellite broadband market. Its proposed low-Earth-orbit constellation is intended to complement the company’s terrestrial network, particularly in locations where conventional infrastructure is difficult to deploy.

Jio Satellite Communications and Starlink are both awaiting final security clearance, according to recent reporting. Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb is also among the satellite operators awaiting the remaining regulatory steps. The government has rejected allegations that it is deliberately favouring one provider over another and has said the approval framework is fair and non-discriminatory.

Musk has publicly accused powerful business interests of obstructing Starlink’s India entry and has directly criticised Ambani. Those allegations remain contested and should not be treated as evidence that Jio has blocked Starlink’s launch. Reliance had not publicly responded to Reuters’ request for comment on Musk’s remarks at the time of its report.

What Indian Customers Should Watch Next

The next meaningful development will be an official announcement covering Starlink’s Indian pricing, equipment costs, service packages and commercial availability. Those details will help customers assess whether the service is competitive for homes and businesses, particularly in areas where terrestrial broadband is unreliable or unavailable.

Jio’s satellite service plans and the timing of both companies’ regulatory clearances will also shape the competitive landscape. The two providers could compete for some of the same customers while serving different connectivity needs in other areas.

For now, Musk has acknowledged that price will be central to Starlink’s India strategy, but the economics remain unknown. Until SpaceX publishes Indian tariffs and confirms commercial availability, it is too early to conclude that Starlink will be cheaper than Jio or offer a better-value connection for the average household.
