Reliance Jio, the telecom unit of Reliance Industries, which makes Jio feature phones, is now going to knock into the smartphone world. Cheap Android-powered smartphones will be brought by Jio. According to an online report, Reliance Jio’s Android smartphone will come with many great data packs. According to the report, the phone can be launched in December this year or early next year. Having said this, Reliance is India’s most valued company. An investment of about Rs 33,102 crore was announced by Google of Alphabet company in its digital unit in July this year. Reliance, under the control of Mukesh Ambani, said in July that an Android operating system (OS) was being developed by Google, on which Reliance would design the 4G and 5G smartphones.
“Through this partnership, we are confident that we can accelerate the national mission of putting a smart device in the hands of every Indian. As India is standing at the doorsteps of the 5G era, we should accelerate the migration of 350 Mn Indians, who currently use a 2G feature phone, to an affordable smartphone. Jio is determined to make India 2G-mukt (2G-free),” Ambani had said.
The arrival of Reliance Jio’s new smartphone could shock Chinese smartphone companies such as Xiaomi, Realme, Oppo, and Vivo, which dominate the low-cost smartphone market in India. These Chinese companies occupy the Indian market of about Rs 14,713 crore ($ 2 billion). Of this, the share of smartphones is about Rs 7,360 crore.
Reliance Jio feature phone was launched by Reliance in the year 2017. Currently, Jio Phone has more than 100 million users in India. Most of them are using the Internet for the first time.
