Jio has experienced a significant surge by adding 1.84 million active wireless users in October 2023. The telco’s active user base grew from 420.27 million to 422.11 million MoM. Jio’s total customer base is 452.37 million.
India’s leading telecom operator, Reliance Jio emerged as a major contributor to the growth of active wireless users in October 2023, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its monthly performance indicators report. In contrast, other major players such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) saw a decline in active wireless users. Although Vodafone Idea showed a rise in active users in September, it appears to be a one-time event. Let’s look at the specifics:
Jio’s impressive growth:
Jio recorded a significant growth of 1.84 million active wireless users in October 2023. The telco’s active user base saw a month-on-month increase from 420.27 million to 422.11 million. Jio’s total subscriber base reached an impressive 452.37 million.
Contradictory Trends for Competitors:
- Bharti Airtel: Lost 1.19 million active users in October 2023, the active user base declined from 376.15 million to 374.96 million. Airtel’s total customer base was 378.13 million.
- Vodafone Idea (Vi): October 2023 saw a decline of 1.14 million active users, resulting in the active user base falling to 198.38 million. Vi’s total customer base was reported to be 225.49 million.
- BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited): Lost more than 0.5 million active users, leaving the total active customer base at 49.49 million. The total customer base of BSNL is reported to be 93.04 million.
Jio’s dominance and market dynamics:
It appears that Jio’s growth in active users has come at the expense of its competitors. The rapid deployment of 5G in various regions of the country could be a key factor in Jio capturing wireless subscriber market share. Additionally, during the month, Jio achieved a milestone by crossing the 450 million mark for its overall wireless subscriber base.
Broadband Subscriber Growth:
The total number of broadband subscribers (combining wireless and wireline) in India increased from 885 million in September 2023 to 888.27 million in October 2023. This suggests a continued trend of expansion in the broadband sector in the country.
