With Tokenisation, Google Pay will enable NFC-capable Android devices to make contactless payments at over 2.5 million Visa merchant locations. It will currently be available only to Axis and SBI cardholders.

On Monday, Google has announced the introduction of NFC based Tokenization service for the convenience of users. The company has rolled out this service across all its platforms. Google is working closely with Visa and banking partners for the Pay Tokenization Service.

We are hopeful that the Tokenisation feature will further encourage users to transact securely and safely in the current times and expand merchant transactions both online and offline.

There will be a lot of convenience with the new service

Simply put, Google Pay users will now be able to swap and pay with their debit and credit cards. Users will not have to physically share their debit or credit card details. Payments can be made through secure digital tokens attached to the card’s mobile number. In the era of Corona, this service of Google Pay can prove to be very helpful for users. Apart from this, Google Pay users will be able to pay at the Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled Point of Sales (POS) terminal using the Tap to pay (Tap-to-pay) feature. There will also be a facility for online payment.

Google’s new payment feature will currently be available only to Axis and SBI cardholders. However, soon the new Google Pay feature will be available for debit and credit cards of the rest of the banks of the country.

How to use Google Pay NFC feature for cardless payments

On your mobile device, open Google Pay.
Tap Settings and then Payment methods and then Add card.
Enter the card number, expiry date, CVV, and the cardholder’s name and billing address.
    Tap Save.
    Accept issuer Terms & conditions
Google will contact your bank to verify your card
    Choose how you will verify
You will be asked for additional authentication via OTP
OTP will be auto-read or you can enter manually
Next to your new card’s payment method listing, tap Activate.
    Enter your one-time password.

This service will also be available in offline mode

Google Pay business head Sajith Sivanandan said that we hope that the tokenization feature will encourage users to do secure transactions. In addition, this service will be expanded online as well as offline. However, at present, this feature is available for online payment only. According to the company, in the tap and pay feature of the smartphone, users will have to register the details of their card once. After this payment will be done through OTP. According to the company, this will also restrict bank fraud to some extent.

Visa recently crossed over 1 billion token credentials globally and with Google Pay live in India, we expect these numbers to rise significantly. We are excited to partner with Google to further accelerate digital payment innovations in times to come for the Indian market and beyond.

To enable the tap and pay feature using the smartphone phone, users will have to do a one-time set up by entering their card details and follow it by entering the OTP they get from the bank to add their card to the Google Pay app. After the registration, the feature can be used to make payments at NFC-enabled terminals, the company said.

“We are already live for Axis and SBI Cardholders with Visa payments network and are working closely with Kotak and other banking partners to further expand the adoption of card-based payments with tokenization in India,” Sivanandan added.
