Amazon has launched its next-generation AI voice assistant, Alexa+, in India, bringing generative AI-powered conversations and task automation to Echo devices, Fire TV and the Alexa app. The new assistant is designed to understand more natural conversations, handle complex requests and perform tasks across Amazon’s ecosystem and connected services.
The biggest attraction for Indian users is the introductory pricing. Amazon is making Alexa+ free for everyone during Early Access, starting September 16. After Early Access ends, the service will remain free for full Amazon Prime members, while other users can access it through a standalone Rs 2,000 monthly subscription or an eligible Prime plan.
Amazon says Alexa+ has been specifically adapted for Indian users, including support for English, Hindi and Hinglish at launch. It can also understand language switching within the same sentence, reflecting the way many Indian users communicate with voice assistants.
Alexa+ India Launch: What Is New?
Alexa+ is an upgraded version of Amazon’s voice assistant built around generative AI. Instead of simply responding to individual commands, Amazon says the new assistant can understand conversational context and complete multi-step tasks.
Users can ask Alexa+ questions using half-formed thoughts, colloquial language or more complex instructions. The assistant is designed to understand the user’s intent rather than relying only on exact command phrases.
The assistant can handle tasks involving music, shopping, schedules, smart-home controls and information. Amazon also plans to expand its ability to handle restaurant reservations, travel planning, food delivery and other services in India.
Alexa+ Is Free During Early Access
The most important detail for Indian consumers is the launch pricing.
Amazon has confirmed that Alexa+ will be free for all customers during the Early Access period. Customers can check their eligibility through Amazon India’s Alexa+ page, while buying an eligible new Echo or Fire TV device provides immediate access.
However, this should not be interpreted as permanent free access for every user.
Once Early Access ends, Amazon says Alexa+ will remain free for customers with a full Prime plan. Prime Lite and Prime Shopping Edition members, along with non-Prime customers, will not automatically retain free access.
For those customers, Amazon will offer Alexa+ as a standalone subscription priced at Rs 2,000 per month or through an eligible Prime plan.
Alexa+ Supports English, Hindi and Hinglish
Language support is one of the most important India-specific aspects of Alexa+.
Amazon says Alexa+ launches in India with English, Hindi and Hinglish support. The assistant can switch between languages within a single sentence, allowing users to speak in the mixed-language style commonly used in everyday Indian conversations.
For example, users can combine English instructions with Hindi words and phrases without having to switch the assistant’s language manually.
Amazon says more Indian languages are planned for the future.
Alexa+ Can Understand More Natural Conversations
The biggest change from traditional Alexa is the way users interact with the assistant.
Instead of remembering a specific command format, users can speak more naturally. Amazon says Alexa+ can understand half-thoughts, colloquialisms and complex ideas while maintaining conversational context.
This allows users to continue a conversation without repeating the complete context every time.
Amazon’s India-specific Alexa+ experience also recognises terms and expressions used in Indian households, including relationship terms, measurements and cultural references. The assistant has been tuned for Indian festivals, food, cricket and Bollywood-related requests.
Alexa+ Can Actually Get Things Done
Amazon is positioning Alexa+ as more than an AI chatbot.
The assistant can perform actions across connected services. For example, users can ask it to play music based on their mood, recommend a gift and help order it, manage their schedule or control compatible smart-home devices.
Alexa+ can also send an email on a user’s behalf in supported scenarios.
The company says upcoming integrations in India will include EazyDiner for restaurant reservations, Swiggy for food delivery and dining reservations, District by Zomato for events and dining, MakeMyTrip for travel bookings, HomeTriangle for home services and TripAdvisor for travel planning.
Alexa+ Works Across Echo, Fire TV and the Alexa App
Alexa+ is not limited to a single Echo speaker.
Amazon says customers can access the assistant through Echo devices, Fire TV and the Alexa app. The company also plans to make Alexa+ available directly through a web browser at Alexa.com for Indian users.
One of the useful features is continuity between devices.
For example, a user could begin researching a recipe on an Echo Show and continue the conversation through the Alexa app while away from home. Amazon says Alexa+ retains the context of conversations across supported experiences.
Alexa+ Gets Smarter at Shopping
Shopping is another major area where Amazon is integrating Alexa+ with its ecosystem.
Users can ask Alexa+ to help find products, compare features, summarise verified reviews and suggest complementary products. The assistant can also track Amazon deliveries, monitor wishlist prices and recommend alternatives when a preferred product is unavailable.
Amazon is also preparing Amazon Now integration for Alexa+, which will allow customers to order groceries and everyday essentials using natural voice conversations.
Once available, users will be able to ask Alexa+ to find a product, choose an option, add it to the cart and place the order through voice.
Alexa+ Can Control Smart Homes More Naturally
Alexa+ also changes how users control compatible smart-home products.
Instead of remembering the exact device name, users can describe what they want to happen. Amazon gives the example of a user saying that it is dark, allowing Alexa+ to understand that the lights in the relevant room should be switched on.
Users can also create custom routines through voice commands. A single instruction can combine several actions, such as changing lights, closing curtains, playing music and starting content on Fire TV.
Amazon says Alexa+ already works with smart-home products from brands including Atomberg, Qubo, Dreame and Wipro.
Alexa+ Uses Personalisation and Ambient AI
Amazon is also introducing more personalisation with Alexa+.
The assistant can learn user preferences, routines, music choices and food preferences. Amazon says voice and visual identification can be used to recognise different household members and tailor responses accordingly.
The company describes this approach as ambient AI, where the technology remains available in the background and becomes useful when needed.
For example, Alexa+ could remind users about routines or identify scheduling conflicts based on information they have shared.
Alexa+ Is Built for India
Amazon says a significant portion of the technology behind Alexa+ was developed by teams in India.
Engineers, scientists and linguists across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai worked on technologies including speech recognition designed for Indian homes and language models capable of handling code-mixed Hinglish and culturally specific requests.
This India-focused development is important because voice assistants have traditionally struggled with mixed-language conversations, accents and culturally specific references.
Amazon is positioning Alexa+ as an assistant that understands how Indian users actually speak rather than simply translating an English-language experience for India.
Privacy Controls Remain Available
With a more capable AI assistant handling conversations and personal information, privacy becomes an important consideration.
Amazon says Alexa+ includes an Alexa Privacy dashboard where users can review their interactions, listen to what Alexa heard, manage shared attachments and control how long voice recordings are stored.
These controls are intended to give users more visibility into their interactions with the assistant.
Alexa+ India Price After Early Access
For users considering Alexa+ beyond the introductory period, the pricing structure is important.
During Early Access, Alexa+ is free for all customers.
After Early Access, full Prime members can continue using Alexa+ without an additional subscription fee. Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition and non-Prime customers can access Alexa+ through a Rs 2,000 monthly standalone subscription or by moving to an eligible Prime plan.
Amazon has therefore used the free Early Access period to let Indian consumers experience the new assistant before the longer-term subscription structure takes effect.
Alexa+ India: What It Means for Users
Alexa+ represents a major shift from the traditional command-based Alexa experience toward a more conversational AI assistant.
Its ability to understand English, Hindi and Hinglish, maintain context across interactions, control smart-home devices and perform tasks across shopping and other services makes the India launch more significant than a simple software update.
For now, the most notable part of the launch is that Alexa+ is free for everyone during Early Access. Users who want to continue using it after that period will need either a qualifying Prime membership or the Rs 2,000 monthly standalone subscription.
With more Indian languages and additional service integrations planned, Amazon’s Alexa+ strategy in India is likely to extend well beyond voice-controlled music, alarms and smart-home commands.
