Jio Platforms’ Rs 30,213-crore initial public offering (IPO) has attracted strong investor demand, putting India’s largest-ever public issue in focus ahead of its final subscription day. By the end of October 22, the IPO was subscribed 5.23 times, with institutional investors leading demand and the retail portion also receiving bids above the shares reserved for it.

But a heavily subscribed IPO is not automatically a good investment at every price. Investors who have already applied, Reliance Industries shareholders considering the reserved quota, and first-time IPO applicants should understand Jio Platforms’ valuation, business prospects, allotment process and potential risks before making a decision.

The public issue closes on October 23, 2026, while the shares are scheduled to list on the BSE and NSE on October 28.

The minimum application value is Rs 12,780 at the lower end of the price band and Rs 13,428 at the upper end, excluding applicable charges. Investors can bid for 12 shares or multiples of 12, subject to the issue rules.

Jio IPO Subscription Status: What the Numbers Mean

The Jio Platforms IPO was subscribed 5.23 times by the end of the second bidding day on October 22, according to reported subscription figures.

    The reported category-wise subscription was:

Investor categorySubscription by end of Day 2
    Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs)12.41 times
    Non-institutional investors (NIIs)5.56 times
    Retail individual investors1.49 times
    Overall issue5.23 times

Institutional demand has been particularly strong. However, subscription figures measure demand relative to the shares available in each category; they do not establish the company’s future share price or guarantee a profit after listing.

Retail applicants should also remember that an oversubscribed category can result in applicants receiving no shares. A valid application is not the same as a confirmed allotment.

Why Is Jio Platforms Going Public?

Jio Platforms is the digital services business of Reliance Industries, with its telecom subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm providing the core connectivity business. Its wider operations and growth plans extend into home broadband, enterprise connectivity and digital services.

The IPO comprises approximately 27 crore newly issued equity shares. It does not include an offer for sale through which existing shareholders sell their holdings in the public issue.

According to the offer documents, Jio Platforms intends to use up to Rs 27,500 crore of the net proceeds to repay or prepay borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm. The remaining proceeds are earmarked for general corporate purposes.

Debt repayment could reduce interest costs and improve financial flexibility. For investors, the important question is whether the company can continue to grow revenue and profits while funding network expansion and other investments.

Jio Platforms Financials: What Should Investors Check?

Jio Platforms reported revenue of approximately Rs 1,49,759 crore and net profit of around Rs 30,053 crore for the financial year ended March 2026, according to figures reported from the offer documents.

Its scale is another major consideration. Reliance Jio Infocomm had approximately 533.3 million customers as of June 30, 2026, giving the business a substantial subscriber base from which to generate recurring connectivity revenue.

Investors should look beyond subscriber numbers, however. The financial measures worth tracking include:

    • Revenue growth: Whether the company can increase revenue as data consumption, tariffs and broadband adoption evolve.
    • Profitability: Whether earnings grow alongside revenue and operating costs remain under control.
    • Average revenue per user (ARPU): Whether Jio can generate more revenue from each subscriber without materially weakening customer retention.
    • Capital expenditure: How much the company needs to invest in 5G, fibre, home broadband and other services.
    • Debt and cash flow: Whether debt repayment and future operating cash generation provide enough flexibility for continued investment.

These factors will influence the business’s long-term performance after listing.

    Is Jio IPO Valuation Expensive?

At the upper end of the IPO price band, Jio Platforms is valued at approximately Rs 10.3 lakh crore, or around US$108 billion. The valuation makes it one of the most significant technology and telecom listings in India.

The offer document cites a price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 33.31 times at the upper end of the price band. It also reports a peer-group average of approximately 22.35 times. These figures suggest that investors are being asked to pay a premium to the stated peer-group average.

A premium valuation can be supported by expectations of future growth, but those expectations need to translate into financial performance. Investors should consider the company’s earnings trajectory, capital requirements, competition and ability to expand beyond its core connectivity business.

Comparisons with other telecom companies also need care. Businesses can differ in their mix of mobile services, home broadband, enterprise operations, profitability, debt and growth opportunities. A single valuation multiple does not capture all those differences.

What Could Drive Jio Platforms’ Growth After the IPO?

Jio’s established subscriber base and network infrastructure provide a foundation for future growth. Several developments could influence its performance as a listed company.

    5G and higher-value telecom plans

As customers upgrade their usage and adopt higher-value plans, Jio could generate additional revenue. The outcome will depend on customer demand, pricing, competition and the cost of maintaining and expanding the network.

    Home broadband and JioAirFiber

Fixed broadband and wireless home internet services offer another growth opportunity. Greater adoption could help Jio serve households and businesses beyond conventional mobile connectivity.

    Enterprise, cloud and AI services

Jio is also pursuing enterprise connectivity, cloud computing and artificial intelligence-related opportunities. These businesses could diversify revenue over time, although investors should assess their actual contribution to earnings rather than assuming that every new initiative will become a major profit source.

    Monetisation of its customer base

Jio’s large customer base offers opportunities to distribute additional services. However, the ability to convert scale into higher profits depends on customer adoption, competitive pricing and execution.

Jio IPO Risks Investors Should Not Ignore

The company’s market position does not remove the risks associated with investing in its shares.

Competition: Jio competes with other telecom operators and digital service providers. Competitive pricing, customer acquisition costs and industry changes can affect profitability.

High investment requirements: Telecom networks require continued spending on spectrum, infrastructure, technology and capacity. Large capital requirements can influence cash flow and returns.

Dependence on telecom revenue: A substantial share of Jio Platforms’ revenue comes from its telecom business. If growth in that segment slows, newer services may take time to compensate.

Regulatory and policy changes: Spectrum rules, telecom licensing, security requirements and other regulations can affect costs and business plans.

New technology competition: Satellite broadband and other connectivity technologies could create competition in certain customer segments, although their scale and commercial impact remain uncertain.

Valuation risk: Even a profitable, growing company can deliver disappointing investment returns if its share price already reflects ambitious growth expectations.

Investors should read the risk factors in the Red Herring Prospectus rather than relying only on subscription figures or brand familiarity.

Already Applied for the Jio IPO? Here Is What to Do Next

Investors who have submitted an application should check that it was accepted and that the required funds remain blocked in their bank account.

The application amount is generally blocked through the ASBA or eligible UPI-based process. If shares are allotted, the amount corresponding to the allotment is debited. If no shares are allotted, the blocked amount is released according to the applicable process.

The expected allotment date is October 26, 2026. Applicants can check the final status through the registrar’s official website or the relevant stock exchange once the information becomes available.

Do not assume that a successful UPI mandate or a blocked amount confirms share allotment. Those steps indicate that the application payment process has been initiated, not that shares have been assigned.

If an application appears unsuccessful or a payment mandate has not been completed, check the status with the broker, bank or application platform before taking further action.

Can Reliance Industries Shareholders Apply Under the Shareholder Quota?

The IPO includes a reserved portion worth up to Rs 2,500 crore for eligible Reliance Industries shareholders, subject to the conditions in the offer documents. An employee reservation worth up to Rs 500 crore is also provided for eligible employees.

Eligibility is governed by the prospectus, including the relevant shareholder eligibility date of October 14, 2026, and other application requirements. Buying Reliance Industries shares after the eligibility cut-off does not create eligibility for this IPO shareholder reservation.

Holding Reliance Industries shares also does not guarantee Jio Platforms IPO allotment. Applicants must select the correct category and comply with the applicable rules. Investors should consult the official offer documents if they are uncertain about eligibility or whether their application was submitted correctly.

Should You Apply for Jio IPO Before It Closes?

There is no universal answer for every investor. The decision depends on investment goals, risk tolerance, valuation expectations and how much exposure the investor already has to Reliance-related businesses.

Investors primarily seeking a quick listing gain should recognise that grey market premiums are unofficial and can change sharply. They are not reliable guarantees of the price at which a share will list.

Investors with a longer time horizon should focus more on the company’s earnings growth, cash generation, competitive position, capital expenditure and valuation. They should also consider whether they can tolerate a fall in the share price after listing.

For people who have already applied, the next step is to verify application status and wait for the allotment result. For those still considering an application, strong subscription demand should be only one part of the decision, not the deciding factor.

The Jio Platforms IPO is a major event for India’s primary market, but its long-term investment outcome will depend on business performance after listing—not just how many times the issue is subscribed.
