Airtel is increasing its postpaid rentals by Rs 50 from October 8, while adding one complimentary international roaming trip every year to every SIM on its new postpaid plans. The roaming benefit includes 5GB of data, 60 minutes of calls and 25 outgoing SMS for five days, giving customers a new travel benefit in exchange for the higher monthly rental.
Airtel Postpaid Plans Get Rs 50 More Expensive
Airtel has revamped its postpaid portfolio with a Rs 50 increase across the plans, with the new individual plan starting at Rs 499 per month instead of Rs 449.
The new family portfolio starts at Rs 749 for two connections, followed by Rs 1,049 for three connections, Rs 1,249 for four connections and Rs 1,799 for five connections. The revised plans will be available from October 8, 2026.
The change is therefore a genuine tariff revision rather than an analyst forecast or temporary promotional offer. Existing Airtel postpaid customers will also be moved to the nearest higher plan within a month, according to company sources cited by PTI.
One Free International Roaming Trip Every Year
The main new benefit is complimentary international roaming.
Every SIM on an eligible Airtel postpaid plan gets one free international roaming trip per year. The included roaming pack provides 5GB of data, 60 minutes of calls, 25 outgoing SMS and free incoming SMS, with a validity of five days.
Airtel is also allowing customers to decide when to use the benefit. The five-day roaming pack does not automatically start when the customer reaches another country; it can be activated at the time the customer chooses.
This is particularly relevant for occasional international travellers who may otherwise purchase a separate roaming pack for every overseas trip.
Family Plans Get Roaming for Every SIM
Airtel’s roaming benefit is not limited to the primary number on a family plan.
Each family member covered by an eligible Airtel postpaid plan receives one complimentary international roaming trip every year. That means a family with multiple connections can potentially use the benefit separately for each member rather than sharing a single roaming allowance.
For example, a four-SIM family plan would provide four annual roaming benefits, one for each eligible SIM.
Airtel Postpaid Plans: New Prices
| Plan | Connections | Monthly rental |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | 1 | Rs 499 |
| Family | 2 | Rs 749 |
| Family | 3 | Rs 1,049 |
| Family | 4 | Rs 1,249 |
| Family | 5 | Rs 1,799 |
All of these plans include unlimited data and calling, spam and fraud protection, and one free international roaming trip per SIM every year. The entertainment and cloud-storage subscriptions vary by plan.
What Airtel Is Offering Beyond Roaming
International roaming is not the only change in Airtel’s revamped postpaid proposition.
The plans continue to include Airtel’s Fast Lane technology, unlimited data and network-level protection against spam and fraudulent links. Airtel is also bundling different combinations of services such as Xstream Play Premium, Google One, Amazon Prime, JioHotstar, Apple Music, Apple iCloud+ and Netflix depending on the plan.
The company is positioning postpaid as a broader premium connectivity package rather than simply a higher-priced mobile connection.
Airtel vs Vi: Who Offers More Free Roaming?
Airtel’s move comes shortly after Vodafone Idea introduced free international roaming on selected postpaid, prepaid and enterprise plans.
Vi’s current postpaid offering starts at Rs 501 for eligible plans. Depending on the plan, customers can receive free international roaming for up to three trips a year across more than 170 countries, with the included data, outgoing minutes and validity varying by plan.
Vi’s current website lists the Rs 501 plan with one free international roaming trip a year, while the Rs 601 plan offers two trips. Higher plans can provide different benefits, so the headline “three trips” applies to eligible plans rather than every Vi postpaid connection.
This makes the comparison more nuanced. Airtel is now giving one annual trip across its new postpaid portfolio, while Vi offers up to three trips on selected plans.
Is Airtel’s Rs 50 Hike Worth It?
For customers who never travel internationally, the additional Rs 50 per month means an extra Rs 600 over a full year without much practical value from the new roaming benefit.
For someone who travels abroad once a year, however, the calculation is different. Airtel says the complimentary roaming pack includes five days of service with 5GB data, 60 minutes of calls and 25 outgoing SMS, and a company source cited by PTI valued the benefit at Rs 2,000.
That does not mean every customer will save Rs 2,000, because the value depends on whether they would otherwise purchase an international roaming pack and how much data and calling they actually use.
The bigger change is that Airtel is moving international roaming from an add-on purchase towards a built-in postpaid benefit.
Airtel and Vi Are Competing for Frequent Travellers
The timing is notable because both Airtel and Vi have recently moved towards bundling international roaming into selected postpaid plans.
For telecom customers, this shifts the comparison away from monthly rental alone. The number of roaming trips, data allowance, voice minutes, validity, family treatment and included digital services can now materially change the value of a postpaid plan.
Airtel’s new Rs 499 entry plan therefore needs to be evaluated not only against the old Rs 449 plan, but also against competing postpaid offerings such as Vi’s Rs 501 plan.
For customers who travel abroad at least once a year, the new Airtel benefit could offset some of the higher rental. For users who remain in India throughout the year, the Rs 50 monthly increase is the more direct change they will notice.
