Jio Platforms IPO May Open on October 21, Listing Likely October 28

Jio Platforms is reportedly moving faster than earlier expectations for its much-awaited IPO, with the issue now planned to open on October 21 and shares likely to list on October 28. The reported $3.8 billion offering could become India’s largest IPO, although the dates and final issue details are yet to be officially confirmed.

Jio Platforms IPO Date Moves Ahead of Earlier Expectations

According to a Reuters report citing two people familiar with the matter, Jio Platforms is planning to launch its IPO on October 21, with the shares expected to be listed on October 28. The report puts the expected issue size at around $3.8 billion, which would make it larger than Hyundai Motor India’s $2.9 billion IPO in 2024.

The latest timeline is earlier than some previous market expectations, which had pointed towards a November listing. Other reports following the Reuters story have also cited October 21 as the expected opening date and October 28 as the likely listing date.

The dates should still be treated as reported rather than final. Jio Platforms is expected to file its red herring prospectus in the week beginning October 12, after which the final offer timetable and price-related details can be established.

Jio Platforms, Not Reliance Jio, Is Going Public

One important distinction is that the upcoming IPO is for Jio Platforms, the Reliance Industries subsidiary that houses the group’s digital businesses.

Reliance Jio Infocomm operates the telecom business and is a material subsidiary of Jio Platforms. Therefore, calling this simply the “Reliance Jio IPO” can be misleading. The public offering is being prepared by Jio Platforms, while a significant portion of the proceeds is expected to be used to reduce borrowings at its telecom subsidiary.

Jio Platforms has also attracted major global investors including Meta and Google. Its businesses extend beyond mobile connectivity into areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud services and enterprise networking.

Where Will the Jio IPO Money Go?

The reported IPO is expected to be predominantly a fresh issue rather than an offer-for-sale by existing shareholders.

According to reports based on the company’s draft prospectus, Jio Platforms could issue up to 27 crore new equity shares. The proceeds are expected to be used primarily to repay or prepay borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, with around Rs 27,500 crore of such borrowings identified in the IPO documents.

This means the IPO is not primarily structured as an exit for existing investors such as Meta and Google. Instead, the fresh capital would strengthen the balance sheet of the Jio ecosystem by helping reduce debt at the telecom operating company.

Jio Platforms Valuation Could Be a Major Talking Point

The valuation attached to the IPO will be closely watched because Jio Platforms combines India’s largest telecom operation with its wider digital ecosystem.

A recent India Today report citing banking sources said the company could be valued at a base enterprise valuation of around $143 billion to $146 billion based on investor interest during overseas roadshows. Other market reports have discussed a broader valuation range, but the final valuation will depend on the eventual price band and share structure.

At this stage, a $130 billion to $170 billion valuation should therefore be treated as a market estimate rather than an announced IPO valuation.

Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani Led Overseas Roadshows

The latest IPO preparations follow a series of overseas investor roadshows.

Jio Platforms reportedly held meetings with potential investors across the US, UK, Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong. The roadshows were led by Akash Ambani, managing director of Jio Platforms and chairman of Reliance Jio, and Isha Ambani, executive director of Reliance Retail Ventures.

The overseas roadshows were intended to gauge investor interest before the company moves into the final stage of its public offering process.

An India roadshow is also expected in the week beginning October 12 after the red herring prospectus is filed, according to reports.

Why the Jio Platforms IPO Matters

If the reported schedule goes ahead, Jio Platforms could become the largest IPO in India’s history by issue size.

The reported $3.8 billion offering would exceed Hyundai Motor India’s $2.9 billion IPO in 2024 and the National Stock Exchange’s recently completed $2.3 billion offering.

For investors, the listing also provides a direct public-market valuation for a business that has become central to Reliance Industries’ digital and telecom strategy.

For Jio itself, reducing telecom debt while accessing public-market capital could provide additional financial flexibility as the company expands its 5G network, broadband operations and newer businesses including AI, cloud and enterprise services.

    Jio Platforms IPO Timeline

Based on the latest reports, the expected timeline is:

    • October 12 week: Red herring prospectus expected to be filed
    • October 19: Anchor investor process is reportedly expected
    • October 21: IPO expected to open
    • October 23: IPO expected to close
    • October 28: Shares expected to list

These dates remain subject to the final IPO documents and regulatory process. The October 21 opening and October 28 listing have been reported by Reuters sources, rather than formally announced by Jio Platforms.

The next major milestone will therefore be the filing of the final offer documents. That filing should provide investors with greater clarity on the issue size, price band, share structure, use of proceeds and other terms before the Jio Platforms IPO opens.
