WhatsApp is expanding its India payments ecosystem with direct bill payments covering 22,722 billers across 30 categories.
WhatsApp has launched its new Bill Payments feature in India, allowing users to find, manage and pay household and utility bills without leaving the messaging app. The service is powered by the Bharat Connect network, formerly known as the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), and gives users access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories.
The launch expands WhatsApp’s payments capabilities beyond peer-to-peer UPI transactions and mobile recharges. It also strengthens Meta’s push to turn WhatsApp into a platform where Indian users can complete more everyday tasks without switching to separate apps.
WhatsApp Bill Payments Comes to India
With the new Bill Payments feature, users can access bill payment services directly from WhatsApp. Meta says the feature is being rolled out gradually across India and will become available to Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
Users can tap the rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen to access the payments section. From there, they can select a bill category, choose their biller, enter and confirm their account details, and review the bill fetched through the service.
WhatsApp then allows users to select their preferred payment method and complete the transaction within the app. Supported options include UPI, debit cards and credit cards.
22,722 Billers Across 30 Categories
The biggest part of WhatsApp’s new bill payment push is its integration with Bharat Connect. According to Meta, the service provides access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories.
These include common household and financial payments such as electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card bills and loan repayments. This gives WhatsApp a considerably broader utility-payment proposition than simply adding electricity or mobile bills to its existing UPI functionality.
WhatsApp is also adding features designed to make recurring payments easier to manage. Bills can be pre-fetched, while previously paid billers can appear on the Payments Home screen for quicker access.
Users can additionally manage multiple accounts under the same biller. This could be useful for people handling separate electricity, broadband, gas or other household accounts for their home, office or family members.
How to Pay Bills on WhatsApp
To use the new WhatsApp Bill Payments feature, users can follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the rupee icon at the top of the home screen.
- Select the relevant bill category.
- Choose the biller or service provider.
- Enter and confirm the required account details.
- Review the fetched bill amount and other details.
- Select UPI, debit card or credit card as the payment method.
- Confirm the payment.
The feature is being rolled out in phases, so it may not immediately appear for every WhatsApp user in India. Meta says it will become available to all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
WhatsApp Takes on India’s Digital Payments Apps
The launch puts WhatsApp more directly into the broader bill-payment ecosystem, where platforms such as PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm already offer utility and recurring payment services.
WhatsApp has an important advantage: its payments functionality is being added to an app that is already widely used for messaging, business communication and other services. Meta has been gradually expanding WhatsApp’s role in India, adding prepaid mobile recharges in 2026 and making it easier for users to access payments through the dedicated rupee icon.
The company previously introduced UPI payments in India in partnership with NPCI, allowing users to send money directly through WhatsApp. The new bill-payment functionality builds on that existing payments infrastructure while adding a new category of routine transactions.
For consumers, the biggest change may be convenience rather than the availability of a completely new payment method. Instead of opening a dedicated payments app every time a bill is due, WhatsApp users can potentially discover, track and settle multiple household bills from the same app they already use every day.
The move also fits into Meta’s broader strategy of making WhatsApp an all-purpose platform in India. The company has increasingly added services such as mobile recharges, business interactions, ticketing and citizen services, gradually expanding the app beyond messaging.
What This Means for Indian Users
WhatsApp’s bill payment launch could be particularly useful for households managing multiple recurring payments. Features such as bill pre-fetching, payment history, multiple accounts per biller and shortcuts for frequently used providers are designed to reduce the effort involved in tracking regular bills.
However, the rollout will be gradual, meaning availability may vary between users during the initial phase. Users should also ensure they are running the latest version of WhatsApp when checking whether the Bill Payments option has appeared on their account.
With access to more than 22,700 billers and 30 categories through Bharat Connect, WhatsApp is moving beyond being a messaging platform with an integrated payments option. It is increasingly positioning itself as a single interface for everyday digital services in India.
