A company official said that Jio is planning to bring in 5G smartphones for less than Rs 5000 after which the company will gradually reduce the price to Rs 2500 to Rs 3000 a unit.
Reliance Jio will soon introduce Android-powered 4G and 5G smartphones in India at an affordable price point. However, the Jio 4G smartphone will be launched first from the Jio 5G phone. Jio’s 5G smartphone will be made available at a low-cost price. The company can offer Jio 5G phones in India for less than Rs 5000. After the increase in cell sales, the company can make the Jio 5G smartphone available for sale for Rs 2,500 to 3000 rupees. Explain that currently, the initial price of a 5G smartphone in India is Rs 25,000.
When will the Jio 5G phone be launched in India? No information has been provided by Jio about this at the moment. But it is expected that Jio’s 5G phone can be launched by next year i.e. 2021. A Bloomberg report claimed that Jio is preparing to launch an Android-based 4G smartphone. Jio 4G smartphone will be launched in India in December this year. The price of a Jio 4G smartphone will be around 4000 rupees. The company has set a target of manufacturing more than 200 million 4G smartphones in the next two years.
Jio has partnered with Google to launch Android-based 4G smartphones, making 4G and 5G phones available to Indians at a low price. The phone can be launched with the new Android operating system. Explain that an investment of Rs 33,737 crore has been announced by Google in the jio platform in the month of July. Jio is working on its own 5G network equipment. Jio has demanded a 5G spectrum auction in India from the Department of Telecom soon.
Though there is no confirmation yet whether this smartphone will run on Android or not, chances are high that this will be an Android phone. Jio had earlier made 4G phones running on KaiOS, but they were pitched as smart feature phones, instead of outright smartphones. If this phone is going to be a smartphone, it is almost certain this will run on Android, although instead of using the full Android, Jio may use the Lite version of the Google OS.
Another reason why this new Jio phone is going to be powered by Android is the Google and Jio partnership that was announced earlier this year. Google invested over $4 billion in Jio, and at that time had said that the partnership would focus on creating more affordable Android smartphones for Indian consumers.
At Reliance’s virtual annual general meeting in July, Reliance CEO, Mukesh Ambani announced Reliance Jio’s commercial pact with Google to jointly develop entry-level affordable 4G and possibly 5G smartphones for a ‘2G mukt Bharat’ (free of 2G India) in the future.
Reliance is also working on its 5G network equipment and has asked the Department of Telecom to allocate its spectrum for testing before exporting these products. The government is yet to heed to the request of Reliance Jio. At present, India does not have 5G services and the government has not even allocated spectrum to telecom operators for running field trials aimed at promoting domestic ecosystems for next-generation technology.
