Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited strengthened its position as India’s largest telecommunications provider in June 2026, driven by strong growth across active mobile connections, fiber wireline, and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). According to performance metrics published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio active subscribers grew at the fastest pace among domestic operators during the month, closing in on the monumental 500 million active user milestone.

    Active Wireless Growth Outpaces Competitors

The total count of Reliance Jio active subscribers—measured by Visitor Location Register (VLR) indicators reflecting real-time network usage—grew by 3.33 million in June 2026 to reach 498.90 million. In comparison, rival Bharti Airtel added 2.92 million active users, while Vodafone Idea and state-run BSNL/MTNL recorded net subscriber contractions in their active customer pools.

Out of India’s total 1,201.06 million active mobile connections, Reliance Jio active subscribers now represent approximately 41.5% of the nationwide total. On a gross subscriber basis, Jio closed the month with 503.58 million customers, accounting for 39.3% of the overall mobile market after registering 2.15 million net additions.

Expanding Command Over Fixed-Line and 5G FWA Broadband

In the wireline segment, Jio added 144,057 connections in June, elevating its total fixed-line footprint to 15.63 million subscribers. This gives the company a 32.7% market share in India’s growing wireline broadband landscape.

The operator demonstrated exceptional momentum in the 5G Fixed Wireless Access space. The count of Reliance Jio active subscribers utilizing 5G FWA expanded to 9.11 million after adding 145,790 connections in June—the highest monthly growth recorded in the category. Jio commands 70.5% of India’s total 12.94 million 5G FWA market.

Additionally, Jio remains the only Indian operator utilizing Unlicensed Band Radio (UBR) technology for last-mile fixed-wireless delivery. Its UBR FWA subscriber base grew by 201,302 monthly additions to reach 4.93 million.

Industry Expansion and National Teledensity Trends

TRAI data shows that India’s combined telephone subscriber base (mobile plus wireline) reached 1,348.08 million at the end of June 2026, marking a net addition of 4.98 million connections during the month.

Growth was primarily driven by expanding 5G coverage and urban home broadband deployments. Devices such as the Jio AX3000 WiFi 6 Router continue to facilitate the adoption of high-speed Wi-Fi 6 connections for home users transitioning from legacy copper broadband to 5G AirFiber.

Expert Analysis: Network Quality and Subscriber Monetization

Industry Context: The ability to lead additions in Reliance Jio active subscribers while scaling fixed-wireless access highlights the structural strength of its Standalone (SA) 5G network architecture. By converting mobile data users into high-ARPU AirFiber home broadband subscribers, Jio is effectively monetizing its nationwide 5G capital expenditure.

While competitors continue to invest in network upgrades, Jio’s multi-technology approach—combining optical fiber, 5G SA AirFiber, and UBR wireless links—allows it to bypass last-mile cabling challenges in dense urban centers and rural markets alike.

What This Means For Consumers and Investors

The latest TRAI metrics reflect clear strategic takeaways for the Indian market:

    1. Faster Home Broadband Onboarding: Expanding 5G FWA coverage means households in non-fiber areas can access high-speed internet without waiting for physical cable installation.
    2. Consistent Network Reliability: High VLR percentages show that Reliance Jio active subscribers consist predominantly of primary, active SIM cards.
    3. Sustained ARPU Growth Potential: Bundling home broadband, live TV, and OTT services via AirFiber hardware helps improve monthly average revenue per user.

The June 2026 TRAI performance report highlights why Reliance Jio active subscribers remain the driving force across India’s telecommunications sector. By approaching 500 million active mobile users while capturing over 70% of the 5G Fixed Wireless Access market, the operator continues to set the pace for mobile connectivity and home broadband expansion nationwide.
