OnePlus has started officially teasing the OnePlus 16 ahead of its expected China launch, revealing several major hardware and design upgrades over the OnePlus 15. The new flagship is expected to bring a faster display, a much larger battery, a new Snapdragon chipset and a redesigned camera system.
1. 165Hz Display With Higher Gaming Refresh Rate
The OnePlus 16 is officially confirmed to support a 165Hz refresh rate, up from the 165Hz-class display on the OnePlus 15 but with OnePlus positioning the new panel around high-refresh-rate gaming. Reports indicate the display could reach up to 185Hz in supported gaming scenarios.
The phone is expected to use a 6.78-inch flat OLED panel with a high resolution, although the complete display specifications have not yet been officially disclosed. The higher refresh rate should primarily benefit gaming and fast animations rather than everyday scrolling.
2. 9,000mAh Battery Could Be the Biggest Upgrade
One of the most significant reported changes is the battery. The OnePlus 16 is tipped to feature a 9,000mAh battery, compared with the 7,300mAh battery in the OnePlus 15.
The larger cell could give the phone substantially more endurance, particularly for gaming and other demanding workloads. Reports also point to 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, although charging specifications beyond the information revealed through certification and leaks should be treated as provisional.
3. New Snapdragon Flagship Chip
OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 16 will use Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family. A September 23 report identifies the specific processor as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and says OnePlus is pairing it with its Wind Chaser Gaming Kernel.
OnePlus says the new gaming architecture can enable frame rates of up to 185fps. The company is also expected to focus heavily on sustained gaming performance, making the chipset and dedicated gaming technologies an important part of the OnePlus 16’s upgrade package.
4. Major Camera Hardware Upgrade
The OnePlus 16 is expected to retain a triple-camera setup but could make a substantial change to the sensors. Current reports point to a 200MP primary camera alongside 50MP ultrawide and 50MP periscope telephoto cameras.
The exact camera configuration has been disputed in earlier leaks, so the 200MP sensor should not yet be treated as the final specification until OnePlus confirms it. The redesigned camera island itself has been officially shown, with the phone moving to a distinctive square camera module.
5. New Design and Customisable Shortcut Key
The OnePlus 16 will not completely abandon the design language of its predecessor, but OnePlus is introducing several visible changes. Official teasers show a flat display, a metal frame and a new camera design inspired by a Magic Cube.
The company has also revealed a customisable AI shortcut key that can perform up to nine functions. The phone is expected in three colours — Tomorrow Starlight, Dark Forest and Martian Masterpiece — with the Tomorrow Starlight version featuring an interactive light integrated into the rear panel.
OnePlus 16 India Launch Is Still Unconfirmed
The OnePlus 16 is currently confirmed for China, with the company yet to announce an India launch. A recent report citing tipster Yogesh Brar claimed that OnePlus could instead use the OnePlus 16R as its flagship offering in India in 2027. That claim remains unconfirmed by OnePlus.
The official OnePlus India website currently lists the OnePlus 15 and OnePlus 15R, but does not list the OnePlus 16.
For now, the OnePlus 16’s confirmed 165Hz display and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6-series platform, combined with the reported 9,000mAh battery and upgraded camera hardware, point to a substantial hardware refresh. However, several specifications remain based on reports until OnePlus makes a full announcement.
