Reliance Jio has launched JioShield, a family safety and digital parenting service that combines location tracking, SOS alerts and smartphone controls in a connected two-app system. The service costs Rs 1,000 for one year, while Jio’s 10th-anniversary programme provides Rs 1,000 worth of recharge vouchers along with Canva Pro and an unlimited 5G upgrade.
What Is JioShield?
JioShield is designed to help parents stay connected with their children and manage their digital activity. The system uses JioShield on the child’s Android phone and the JioThings app on the parent’s phone, with both devices paired through Jio’s platform.
The service provides near-real-time location updates, 30 days of location history and one-tap location refresh. Parents can also create geo-fenced areas such as home or school and receive alerts when the child enters or leaves those zones.
JioShield Offers SOS and Phone-Finding Features
JioShield includes SOS alerts that can send the child’s location to the parent when assistance is needed. A low-battery alert is also available, helping parents know when the connected phone is running out of power.
Another feature called Buzz Phone allows parents to remotely ring the child’s phone even when it is set to silent. Jio also lists a Safety Call feature that allows the parent to call from the child’s number through JioThings and hear what is happening around them.
Screen Time, App and Contact Controls
The digital safety side of JioShield allows parents to set daily screen-time limits and app usage allowances. Once the permitted time runs out, the device can be locked according to the configured limits.
Parents can also approve which applications a child can use and restrict access to other apps. Contact whitelisting can limit incoming calls and messages to approved contacts, although Jio says outgoing call and message blocking is still coming soon.
Rs 1,000 Subscription Comes With Recharge Vouchers
JioShield costs Rs 1,000 as a one-time enrolment fee for one year. Under Jio’s 10th-anniversary programme, customers receive ten Rs 100 Jio recharge vouchers, giving a total voucher value of Rs 1,000.
The vouchers are not cash and cannot simply be withdrawn or converted into money. Jio’s programme terms state that each voucher must be redeemed in full and within its stated validity period. The vouchers are intended for eligible Jio mobility prepaid recharges of Rs 399 and above on unlimited 5G plans.
This is why Jio describes the programme as effectively free: customers pay Rs 1,000 upfront for JioShield and receive Rs 1,000 in eligible recharge vouchers. However, the value is realised through qualifying future recharges rather than as an immediate refund.
Canva Pro and 5G Benefits Included
The anniversary programme also includes a one-year Canva Pro subscription. Jio’s programme terms confirm that the Rs 1,000 fee covers one year of JioShield and Canva Pro, along with the recharge vouchers.
Jio is also offering an unlimited 5G upgrade for 28 days as part of the anniversary benefits. The offer is available to eligible customers, with Jio’s programme requiring an active Jio mobile number on a qualifying recharge plan.
Android Requirement and iOS Availability
The monitored device currently needs to be an Android smartphone running Android 10 or later with an active Jio mobile number. Both the parent and child need to register using Jio numbers to enrol in the service.
The JioThings app for parents is currently available on Android, while Jio says iOS support is scheduled to arrive from October 1, 2026. This means the monitored child’s device remains subject to the Android requirement at launch.
JioShield Raises a Privacy Consideration
Because location monitoring is a core part of JioShield, privacy and data handling are important considerations for families. Jio’s privacy policy says the app can collect personal information needed to provide its services and can access, collect and analyse location information when location services are enabled. It also says information is retained for the limited period necessary for the stated purposes, unless a longer period is required or permitted by law.
Jio’s terms separately state that using JioShield requires acceptance of its terms and privacy policy. Families considering the service should therefore review those documents alongside the app’s permissions before enabling location and monitoring features.
Jio’s Family Safety Push
JioShield extends Jio’s ecosystem beyond connectivity into family safety, digital wellbeing and device management. Rather than requiring a separate standalone parental-control service, Jio is linking these functions to its own mobile ecosystem through JioThings and JioShield.
The Rs 1,000 anniversary programme also changes the economics for eligible Jio customers, but the “free” description comes from the matching recharge-voucher value. Customers still pay the Rs 1,000 enrolment fee upfront and must use the vouchers against qualifying Jio recharges to recover that value.
