Jio and Apple Bring Paid RCS Business Messaging to iPhones in India

Jio has introduced commercial RCS messaging rates for businesses, expanding Apple’s RCS ecosystem to enterprise communication on iPhones in India.

Reliance Jio and Apple have opened a new front in India’s business messaging market, with Jio introducing commercial pricing for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages sent to iPhone users on its network. The development allows businesses to use RCS for marketing, transactional communications and one-time passwords (OTPs) through the native messaging experience on supported iPhones.

The new pricing follows Apple’s expansion of RCS business messaging on iOS and gives enterprises a carrier-backed channel to reach customers with richer messages than traditional SMS. Jio is currently the exclusive RCS provider for iPhone users in India, according to its Jio Business Messaging platform.

Jio Introduces Separate RCS Business Messaging Rates

Jio’s new pricing separates business RCS traffic into marketing, transactional and OTP categories. According to pricing details reported by Economic Times, businesses pay Rs 0.27 to Rs 0.30 per marketing message, Rs 0.25 for transactional messages and Rs 0.11 to Rs 0.16 for OTP messages.

The new rates took effect from September 1, replacing an earlier flat RCS pricing structure of around Rs 0.08 to Rs 0.10 per message. Depending on the message category, the change represents a substantial increase in the cost of sending business RCS traffic.

The pricing structure also reflects the different purposes for which enterprises use messaging. Marketing messages can carry promotional content, while transactional messages can be used for order updates and service notifications. OTP messaging, meanwhile, remains focused on authentication and verification use cases.

iPhone Users Become Part of India’s RCS Business Market

Apple has supported RCS messaging on compatible iPhones, allowing users to exchange richer messages with Android devices through the Messages app. Apple says RCS can support high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery receipts, read receipts and typing indicators, while availability depends on the network provider.

Apple’s support for RCS Business Messages adds another layer to that capability. Apple says businesses can send alerts and updates about orders and transactions through RCS, while iPhone users can switch RCS Business Messages on or off from the Messages settings.

For Jio customers, this means business communications can arrive directly inside the native messaging application without requiring a separate messaging app.

Jio Positions RCS Against WhatsApp Business

The expansion could intensify competition with WhatsApp, which has become a major channel for Indian businesses handling customer conversations, notifications, commerce and support.

Jio’s own Business Messaging platform supports branded sender profiles, rich cards, carousels, action buttons, suggested replies and other interactive features. The service is designed to let businesses create richer customer journeys directly within the customer’s native messaging inbox.

The biggest advantage for RCS is that customers do not need to install another application to receive these messages. On supported devices and networks, businesses can reach users through the standard messaging environment already built into the phone.

That gives telecom operators and the broader RCS ecosystem an opportunity to capture business communication traffic that has increasingly moved beyond traditional SMS.

Jio Has an Early Advantage on iPhone

Jio’s partnership with Apple is particularly significant because Apple’s RCS implementation on iPhone depends on support from network providers. Apple’s current carrier support page lists Reliance Jio as supporting RCS messaging for iPhone users in India.

Jio’s Business Messaging platform also describes itself as the exclusive RCS provider on iOS in India, giving the operator an early position as Apple expands business RCS in the country.

Other Indian operators could change that competitive picture. Economic Times reports that Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are expected to join Apple’s RCS ecosystem, although their commercial business-messaging pricing and rollout timelines remain separate developments.

What the Move Means for Businesses

For enterprises, the attraction of RCS is the ability to combine the reach of carrier messaging with richer interaction. Instead of sending a plain SMS containing a link, brands can potentially use images, branded sender information, interactive buttons, carousels and suggested actions.

Jio says its RCS platform can also integrate with CRM systems, marketing automation platforms, ecommerce services and analytics tools through APIs and webhooks. That makes the service relevant not only for promotional campaigns but also for customer-service and transaction workflows.

However, the higher pricing introduced by Jio will be an important consideration for companies that send large volumes of business messages. Enterprises will need to compare RCS costs with SMS, WhatsApp Business and other customer-engagement channels while considering the additional engagement and interactive capabilities RCS provides.

India’s RCS Business Messaging Market Enters a New Phase

The Jio-Apple development marks an important shift for India’s RCS market because iPhone users are now becoming part of the commercial business-messaging opportunity rather than RCS being primarily an Android-focused channel.

For Jio, the move also expands its role beyond connectivity into enterprise communications and customer-engagement infrastructure. For Apple, enabling business RCS gives companies another way to communicate with iPhone users without relying entirely on third-party messaging platforms.

As Airtel and Vodafone Idea potentially enter the same ecosystem, competition could eventually shift from simply supporting RCS to offering businesses attractive pricing, delivery performance, analytics and richer customer experiences. That could make RCS a more important part of India’s enterprise messaging market while putting additional pressure on established channels such as WhatsApp Business.
