Google is testing a new shopping feature in India that lets selected users buy products from Flipkart directly through Gemini and Google AI Mode. The experiment takes Google’s AI shopping experience beyond product discovery and recommendations toward completing transactions.
Google Tests ‘Buy’ Button for Flipkart Products
Selected users are seeing a “Buy” button alongside certain Flipkart product listings surfaced in Gemini and AI Mode. Tapping the button opens a Flipkart-branded checkout flow, allowing shoppers to proceed with their purchase without having to leave the AI interface and search for the product again.
The test is currently limited to a small group of users and a relatively narrow selection of products. Reports indicate that smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories are among the categories included in the early experiment. Other users continue to see regular Flipkart listings without the direct purchase option.
Flipkart Checkout Remains Part of the Experience
The feature does not appear to replace Flipkart’s checkout system. Instead, the Buy button takes users into a Flipkart-branded checkout flow while keeping the shopping journey connected to the AI interface.
This approach allows Google to use Gemini and AI Mode for product discovery while Flipkart handles the actual commerce experience. The arrangement also differs from a fully Google-hosted checkout, since the purchase flow remains associated with Flipkart.
Google Moves AI Shopping Towards Transactions
AI shopping has so far largely focused on helping users find products, compare options and receive recommendations. Adding a direct purchase option brings the technology closer to what is increasingly being described as agentic commerce, where AI systems can participate in multiple stages of a shopping journey.
Google has also been developing its Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard intended to allow AI agents and merchants to interact across stages of commerce, including checkout. Flipkart has previously been identified as a partner in Google’s efforts around agentic shopping in India.
Wider Rollout Could Come in October
The current Flipkart shopping test is still limited, and Google has not announced a general rollout date. Reports indicate that Google plans to expand the capability later in October, ahead of India’s major festive shopping season.
For Indian shoppers, the experiment could mark a shift in how AI assistants are used for online purchases. Instead of simply directing users to an e-commerce marketplace after finding a product, Gemini and AI Mode could increasingly become the starting point for the entire shopping journey.
