Google is expanding AI Mode into a travel assistant with flight alerts, loyalty rewards comparisons and hotel booking capabilities.
Google is expanding the capabilities of Google AI Mode by turning it into a more useful travel planning assistant. The latest update brings flight price tracking, points and miles comparisons and hotel booking capabilities directly into AI Mode within Google Search.
The move could make Google Search more useful for people planning trips, as users can now research travel options and receive assistance with bookings without relying entirely on separate travel applications. Google is also bringing these capabilities to users across multiple markets, although hotel booking availability remains more limited at launch.
Google AI Mode Adds Flight Price Tracking
One of the biggest additions is flight price tracking. Google has integrated the price-alert functionality of Google Flights into AI Mode, allowing users to ask the AI assistant to monitor fares for a particular journey.
Users can provide their departure location, destination and preferred travel dates while interacting with AI Mode. The system can then surface available flight options and current prices from more than 300 partner airlines and travel websites.
More importantly, users can ask Google AI Mode to track prices for their selected itinerary. Once the tracking request is confirmed, Google can send an email notification when the relevant fares change.
According to Google, the flight price tracking capability is available across more than 180 countries and territories, giving the feature a potentially broad international reach.
AI Mode Can Compare Points and Miles
Google is also making AI Mode more useful for travellers who prefer using loyalty points and airline miles instead of paying the full ticket price.
Users can describe their planned journey and specify the loyalty programme they want to use. AI Mode can then provide information about the number of points or miles required for eligible flights based on information supplied by Google’s travel partners.
The same functionality is being extended to hotel stays. This means users can potentially compare the rewards cost of different travel options before deciding how they want to use their accumulated loyalty balances.
The points and miles feature is being made available globally, although the number of supported loyalty and travel partners will vary depending on the programme and market.
Google AI Mode Expands Travel Partner Support
Google has confirmed support for several airlines and hotel companies as part of the new points and miles functionality.
The initial partner ecosystem includes names such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Choice Hotels International, Hilton and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.
Google is also expected to expand the programme with additional partners, including Accor, Flying Blue, Hyatt, LATAM Airlines and Lufthansa Group.
This partner-based approach is important because AI Mode does not need to become the booking provider itself. Instead, it can aggregate relevant travel information and direct customers to participating airlines, hotel companies or travel platforms when they are ready to complete their purchase or redemption.
Hotel Booking Comes Directly to AI Mode
Another significant development is the ability to search for and book hotels through Google AI Mode.
Users can describe their destination, travel dates and accommodation preferences in a conversational query. AI Mode can then present suitable properties along with information such as guest reviews and other factors that can help users compare hotels.
After selecting a property, users can continue with the booking process through an integrated hotel chain or online travel agency.
Google says the Continue on Google option can take users through the transaction process, with Google Pay being used to complete supported bookings.
This creates a more streamlined experience compared with traditional search, where users typically move between search results, hotel websites and booking platforms before completing a reservation.
Hotel Booking Is Initially Limited
While flight price tracking has received a broad rollout, hotel booking through Google AI Mode is currently more restricted.
Google has initially made the hotel booking functionality available in the US and in English. The company plans to expand the feature through additional travel and hospitality partners.
The announced partners include Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Hilton, Marriott International, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, among others.
The expansion of these partnerships will determine how useful the booking functionality becomes across different countries.
What Google AI Mode Means for Travel Search
The latest update represents a broader shift in how Google wants users to interact with Search.
Traditional travel search requires users to perform multiple individual actions. They may search for flights, compare prices, check hotel availability, investigate reviews, compare loyalty points and finally visit another website to make a booking.
Google AI Mode is increasingly attempting to combine these steps into a single conversational experience.
Instead of searching separately for each part of a trip, users can describe their requirements and allow AI Mode to assemble relevant information. This could make the process faster, particularly for users who have flexible travel dates or specific preferences.
AI Could Change How Users Compare Travel Deals
The addition of price tracking could be particularly useful for travellers who are not ready to purchase immediately.
Rather than repeatedly checking flight prices manually, users can ask Google AI Mode to monitor a particular route and receive an alert when the fare changes.
The points and miles functionality also adds another layer to travel comparison. A traveller may have enough loyalty points for a flight but may find that using those points for a hotel provides better value.
By presenting these options within Search, Google can potentially help users make decisions based on both cash prices and loyalty rewards.
Google AI Mode Could Become a Full Travel Assistant
The direction of the update suggests that Google wants AI Mode to move beyond answering questions and become an assistant capable of completing practical tasks.
Flight discovery, price monitoring, loyalty programme comparisons and hotel bookings are all steps in the same travel-planning workflow.
The company already has a large travel ecosystem through Google Flights, Google Hotels, Google Maps and its advertising infrastructure. Bringing these services closer together through AI Mode could give Google a significant advantage as generative AI becomes increasingly involved in online travel planning.
However, the actual booking transaction may still involve an airline, hotel chain or online travel agency depending on the service and market.
India Could Be an Important Market
For Indian users, the eventual expansion of these features could be particularly interesting because online travel bookings are increasingly influenced by price comparisons, loyalty benefits and flexible payment options.
Google has not announced that all of the new hotel booking capabilities are immediately available in India. The current hotel booking rollout is limited to the US and English, so Indian users may need to wait for a wider expansion.
Flight price tracking, however, has been announced across more than 180 countries and territories, making the broader AI-powered travel experience relevant to Google’s international user base.
As AI Mode expands into more countries and adds additional local travel partners, its usefulness for Indian travellers could increase significantly.
Google Is Making Search More Action-Oriented
The latest Google AI Mode update shows how Search is gradually moving from simply providing information towards helping users act on that information.
Previously, a user might search for a flight and then visit an airline or travel website separately. With the latest capabilities, Google can monitor fares, compare rewards and assist with hotel reservations within the same broader Search experience.
That does not mean every travel transaction will happen entirely inside Google. Partner websites and booking platforms remain an important part of the ecosystem.
However, the number of steps between discovering an option and acting on it is becoming smaller.
For Google, this could make AI Mode a much more important part of Search. For travellers, it could eventually mean having a single AI-powered interface for researching, monitoring and booking much of an entire trip.
