India’s prepaid users who mainly make calls and send SMS now have more reasons to compare voice-only recharge plans instead of paying for mobile data they rarely use. Airtel has introduced three new voice-and-SMS-only packs, while Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have longer-validity options listed in recent plan comparisons.

The change follows new Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) rules requiring operators to provide more flexible voice-and-SMS-only recharge options, including shorter validity periods. The rules are intended to give customers greater choice, particularly those who use feature phones, rely on Wi-Fi for internet access or maintain a secondary SIM mainly for calls.

Here is a comparison of voice-only prepaid plans from Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL, including prices, validity, SMS benefits and the important differences to check before recharging.

Best voice-only prepaid plans in India: Price and validity

The following comparison uses the latest published plan information available for this report. Some plans are circle-specific, and the availability of newly mandated shorter-duration packs should be confirmed through the operator’s current recharge page or app.

Operator and planPriceValidityCalling and SMS benefitsApprox. cost per day
    AirtelRs 18528 daysUnlimited calls, 300 SMSRs 6.61
    AirtelRs 20330 daysUnlimited calls, 300 SMSRs 6.77
AirtelRs 206Calendar monthUnlimited calls, 300 SMSVaries by month
    AirtelRs 1,849365 daysUnlimited calls, 3,600 SMSRs 5.07
    JioRs 44884 daysUnlimited calls, 1,000 SMSRs 5.33
    JioRs 1,748336 daysUnlimited calls, 3,600 SMSRs 5.20
    ViRs 47084 daysUnlimited calls, 900 SMSRs 5.60
    ViRs 1,849365 daysUnlimited calls, 3,600 SMSRs 5.07
BSNLRs 43980 daysReported unlimited calls and 300 SMS; confirm current availabilityRs 5.49

Prices and benefits are based on published plan reports and are not a guarantee of nationwide availability. Vi’s Rs 470 and Rs 1,849 options have been reported in its Maharashtra-circle listings. The BSNL Rs 439 option requires confirmation against the current plan catalogue for your circle. Airtel’s Rs 1,849 plan should also be checked before purchase. Daily costs are calculated from the listed price and validity, not the amount paid upfront.

    1. Airtel voice-only plans: Rs 185, Rs 203 and Rs 206

Airtel has introduced three prepaid recharges aimed at customers who want calling and SMS without bundled mobile data. The plans cost Rs 185, Rs 203 and Rs 206, with different validity periods.

    Plan priceValidityMain benefits
Rs 18528 daysUnlimited local, STD and roaming calls; 300 SMS
Rs 20330 daysUnlimited local, STD and roaming calls; 300 SMS
Rs 206Calendar monthUnlimited local, STD and roaming calls; 300 SMS

All three plans also include HelloTunes, according to published plan details. None includes a mobile data allowance.

The main difference is validity. The Rs 185 plan has the lowest upfront cost, while the Rs 203 option provides 30 days of service for Rs 18 more. The Rs 206 option is designed around calendar-month validity rather than a fixed 28-day cycle.

    Who should choose Airtel?

Airtel’s shorter-duration packs are worth considering for users who do not need mobile data and prefer to recharge in smaller amounts. The calendar-month option may also suit people who want a more predictable monthly recharge cycle.

Customers looking for an annual recharge should verify the current availability and benefits of the reported Rs 1,849 option before paying.

    2. Jio voice-only plans: Rs 448 and Rs 1,748

Jio’s published voice-and-SMS-only options include a Rs 448 pack with 84 days of validity and a Rs 1,748 pack with 336 days of validity.

    Plan priceValidityMain benefits
Rs 44884 daysUnlimited calls; 1,000 SMS
Rs 1,748336 daysUnlimited calls; 3,600 SMS

Published reports also list selected Jio digital-service benefits with these plans. Customers should check the current Jio recharge listing for the exact included services and any applicable conditions.

The Rs 448 option works out to about Rs 5.33 per day. The Rs 1,748 option costs around Rs 5.20 per day, but it lasts 336 days rather than a full 365 days.

    Who should choose Jio?

These plans may suit users who want a longer calling-focused recharge and do not need a bundled daily data allowance. The Rs 448 option is useful for comparing quarterly-style validity, while the longer plan reduces the frequency of recharges.

However, as of the latest published comparison reviewed for this report, Jio’s listed options were longer-validity plans. Its current shorter-duration voice-only options should be checked directly rather than assumed to match Airtel’s new packs.

    3. Vi voice-only plans: Rs 470 and Rs 1,849

Vi’s published voice-and-SMS-only options include a Rs 470 pack with 84 days of validity and a Rs 1,849 pack with 365 days of validity in its Maharashtra-circle listing.

    Plan priceValidityMain benefits
Rs 47084 daysUnlimited calls; 900 SMS
Rs 1,849365 daysUnlimited calls; 3,600 SMS

The Rs 470 option works out to approximately Rs 5.60 per day, while the annual option costs about Rs 5.07 per day.

These figures should not be treated as a nationwide tariff guarantee. Prepaid plans and benefits can vary by circle, so customers should enter their mobile number or select their circle on Vi’s official recharge page before deciding.

    Who should choose Vi?

Vi is worth comparing if you already use its network, have reliable coverage in your area and want a quarterly or annual calling-focused recharge. Check the SMS allowance, validity and any additional conditions carefully before recharging.

    4. BSNL voice-only plans: What customers should check

BSNL is another important operator for customers looking for basic calling and longer validity. A published plan comparison has listed a Rs 439 voucher with 80 days of validity, unlimited calling and 300 SMS.

However, the availability of this voucher must be confirmed against BSNL’s current official recharge catalogue. Do not assume that an older plan listing is still active or available in every telecom circle.

For existing BSNL users, the most important considerations are the current tariff, incoming and outgoing service conditions, SMS allowance and network coverage at home and work. A low recharge price is useful only if the service meets your needs.

Customers in Delhi and Mumbai may also encounter MTNL-related services, but availability and tariff arrangements differ from those of nationwide operators. Check the applicable operator’s official recharge channel.

Which voice-only recharge is best for you?

The right plan depends on how much you want to pay upfront and how long you need your number to remain active.

    • Lowest upfront recharge: Airtel’s Rs 185 plan, with 28 days of validity.
    • Calendar-month validity: Airtel’s Rs 206 option, subject to current availability.
    • Quarterly-style recharge: Jio’s Rs 448 plan and Vi’s Rs 470 option provide 84 days, where available.
    • Longer validity: Airtel and Vi list Rs 1,849 options with 365 days of validity in published comparisons.
    • Nearly annual validity at a lower upfront cost: Jio’s Rs 1,748 plan lasts 336 days, so users should account for the shorter validity when comparing it with a 365-day pack.
    • BSNL customers: Verify the current voice-focused vouchers for your circle before choosing based on older listings.

For customers who need only basic calling, comparing validity and the total upfront recharge cost is often more useful than choosing a plan based on an operator’s brand alone.

What has changed under TRAI’s new voice-only recharge rules?

TRAI amended its Telecom Consumer Protection Regulations in September 2026 to expand voice-and-SMS-only Special Tariff Vouchers. The new framework requires operators to offer these options across specified shorter validity periods, provide a calendar-month renewal option and maintain corresponding longer-validity choices, with appropriate tariff reductions.

The amended requirements came into effect on 21 October 2026. TRAI has also directed operators to make mandated recharge options easier to find through a dedicated, clearly visible section on their recharge platforms.

Airtel has already listed three shorter-duration voice-only packs. In a comparison published on 19 October, Jio and Vi were still listing their longer-validity options rather than the new shorter-duration packs. The current status of their compliance and any newly introduced plans should be checked before publication.

The change is particularly relevant to people who use basic phones, older users who mainly make calls, customers who rely on Wi-Fi for internet access and those who maintain a secondary SIM for calls or SMS.

Are voice-only plans cheaper than regular prepaid recharges?

They can be, particularly if you rarely use mobile data. A regular prepaid plan may include daily data, entertainment subscriptions and other benefits that are unnecessary for someone who mainly makes calls.

However, compare the total cost and validity rather than assuming every voice-only plan is cheaper. An annual recharge can require a larger upfront payment, while a shorter plan may need more frequent renewals. Also check whether you need a separate data voucher when using internet-based services away from Wi-Fi.

A voice-only recharge does not include bundled mobile data. Apps such as WhatsApp, online maps and internet-based calling may therefore require Wi-Fi or a separate data pack.

    What to check before recharging

Before buying a voice-only plan, confirm these details on the operator’s official website or app:

    • The plan is available for your mobile number and telecom circle.
    • The exact validity, including whether it is 28 days, 30 days, a calendar month or a longer period.
    • The unlimited-calling terms and SMS allowance.
    • Whether any bundled service is included and whether it has separate conditions.
    • Whether you need a separate data pack for internet access.

The new rules give consumers more choice, but there is no universal winner across all operators. The best voice-only recharge is the one that provides the validity and calling benefits you need, at a price you can comfortably pay, on a network that works reliably where you live and travel.
