Apple has unveiled the new iPad mini with an OLED display, its A20 Pro chip and a thinner, lighter design. Announced on 26 October 2026, the updated tablet also introduces an optional nano-texture display, improved wireless connectivity and water and dust resistance, making it a significant refresh for Apple’s compact tablet lineup.
The new iPad mini features a larger 8.5-inch display while retaining a similar overall footprint. Apple is positioning it for users who need a portable device for reading, note-taking, creative work and professional applications. In India, prices start at Rs 82,900 for the Wi-Fi model.
iPad mini 2026: Price in India and availability
Apple has confirmed the Indian pricing and retail schedule for the new iPad mini.
| Variant | Price in India |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Rs 82,900 |
| Wi-Fi + Cellular | Rs 1,00,900 |
| Education pricing starts at | Rs 76,900 |
The tablet will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage configurations, with Midnight and Starlight colour options.
Pre-orders begin on 28 October 2026 through Apple’s India website and Apple Store app. Availability at Apple Stores and authorised resellers is scheduled to begin on 6 November.
The new TechWoven Smart Folio costs Rs 8,500. Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) are also compatible, but these accessories are sold separately.
8.5-inch OLED display comes to iPad mini
The display is one of the most significant changes in the new iPad mini. Apple has replaced the previous generation’s 8.3-inch LCD panel with an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display.
OLED technology allows individual pixels to control their own light output, enabling deeper blacks and higher contrast. This can improve the viewing experience for films, photographs, reading and other visual content.
Apple says the display reaches up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness, with full-screen brightness of up to 600 nits for SDR and HDR content. It can also reduce brightness to as low as one nit, which may be useful for reading in dim environments.
The bezels are 24% thinner than those on the previous generation, allowing Apple to increase the display size without significantly changing the tablet’s footprint.
Nano-texture display option
For the first time on iPad mini, Apple is offering a nano-texture display option. The treatment is designed to reduce glare in bright environments, which could be useful for professionals working outdoors, technicians in the field and users who frequently read under strong lighting.
The option is particularly relevant to people who use a tablet in varied lighting conditions. However, buyers should check which storage configurations offer nano-texture before ordering, as it is not a standard feature across every version.
A20 Pro chip brings a major performance upgrade
The new iPad mini is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which the company says is built using a 2-nanometre manufacturing process.
Apple claims the processor delivers up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 2.7 times faster graphics performance and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance compared with the previous-generation iPad mini. These are Apple’s own test results, and real-world performance will depend on the application and workload.
The chip includes a seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, supporting graphics-intensive tasks and on-device AI processing. Apple says the upgraded hardware is intended to improve activities such as photo editing, 3D rendering, gaming and running AI models locally.
The 512GB configuration also features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine arrangement, according to Apple, aimed at demanding AI workloads.
For students and professionals, the practical benefit should be smoother multitasking and more capability in demanding applications. Whether those improvements justify the price will depend on how much processing power the user needs from a compact tablet.
Thinner design with IP67 protection
Apple says the new iPad mini is 5.4mm thick and lighter than its predecessor. The compact design remains a central part of its appeal for people who want a tablet that can be carried easily between meetings, classrooms, hospitals and travel destinations.
The new model also has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Under controlled laboratory conditions, this rating means the device can withstand immersion in up to one metre of water for up to 30 minutes.
Water resistance is not permanent and can diminish with normal wear. It should not be treated as a guarantee against liquid damage.
The tablet is available in Midnight and Starlight finishes.
Updated cameras, audio and connectivity
The new iPad mini features a 12MP Center Stage front camera positioned along the landscape edge. This orientation is better suited to video calls when the tablet is placed horizontally on a desk or held in landscape mode.
The rear camera is a 12MP wide sensor with Smart HDR 4 support and 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second. Apple has also added an Adaptive True Tone flash to improve photography and document scanning.
Audio has been redesigned through Apple’s Acoustic Display system, which uses specially designed components integrated with the display and enclosure. The aim is to provide clearer sound and stronger bass while supporting the tablet’s sealed design.
For wireless connectivity, the tablet includes Apple’s N1 networking chip with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread support. Cellular versions use Apple’s C2 modem system and support eSIM, subject to carrier compatibility.
iPadOS 27 brings new Apple Intelligence features
The new iPad mini runs iPadOS 27 and supports Apple’s next-generation Apple Intelligence features, including the updated Siri AI experience.
Apple says the software is designed to help users work with personal context, understand on-screen content and carry out tasks across supported applications. Siri AI is rolling out in beta, and the availability of individual features depends on supported languages, regions and device settings.
Apple Intelligence features are not available in every language or region, so Indian buyers should check the supported-language requirements before assuming all advertised capabilities will work in their preferred language.
The tablet also supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), making it suitable for handwritten notes, sketching, document annotation and compatible creative applications.
Who should consider the new iPad mini?
The updated iPad mini could be particularly useful for people who want a compact device with high-end processing power.
- Students: The OLED screen and Apple Pencil support could make the tablet useful for reading, handwritten notes and studying documents.
- Doctors and healthcare professionals: A compact tablet can be convenient for viewing information and using compatible clinical applications, subject to workplace policies and data-security requirements.
- Pilots and field professionals: The smaller form factor, glare-reducing nano-texture option and cellular connectivity could suit work that involves frequent travel or changing lighting conditions.
- Creative users: The A20 Pro chip, OLED display and Pencil support may benefit illustration, editing and other demanding applications.
However, the starting price of Rs 82,900 is substantial for a compact tablet. Buyers who mainly need web browsing, video streaming and basic note-taking may find a less expensive iPad or another tablet sufficient.
Should you buy the new iPad mini?
The 2026 iPad mini introduces meaningful changes, particularly the OLED display, A20 Pro processor, nano-texture option and thinner design. Its updated cameras, connectivity and IP67 rating add to the overall package.
The biggest consideration is the price. Starting at Rs 82,900, the tablet is aimed at users who value portability and advanced hardware rather than those simply looking for an affordable device for entertainment.
If you own an older iPad mini and use it regularly for work, drawing or demanding applications, the new display and processor could make the upgrade worthwhile. Owners of the recent model should compare the improvements against their actual needs before spending more than Rs 80,000.
The new iPad mini will be available to order in India from 28 October, with retail availability beginning on 6 November 2026.
