Jio has showcased AI-powered smart glasses at India Mobile Congress 2026 that can combine voice-based AI, visual intelligence and UPI payments, potentially allowing users to make payments without taking their smartphone out.
Jio’s AI Glasses Put UPI Into a Wearable
Reliance Jio is showcasing a new range of AI wearables at India Mobile Congress 2026, including smart glasses and AI earbuds. The most interesting part of the demonstration is a camera-equipped version of the Jio smart glasses that supports a UPI payment experience without requiring users to pull out their smartphone.
Jio demonstrated the glasses at its IMC 2026 booth as part of a wider portfolio of India-focused AI and connectivity technologies. The company has not yet disclosed the complete hardware specifications, pricing or final commercial feature set, so the UPI capability should currently be viewed as a demonstrated feature rather than a fully launched payment product.
Camera and Audio Versions
Jio is showing at least two versions of the smart glasses. One is a camera-equipped model with visual intelligence, while another focuses on audio and is designed to look more like conventional eyewear.
The glasses can be activated through the “Hello Jio” voice command, allowing users to interact with Jio’s AI assistant, ask questions and obtain information. The camera model adds the ability to understand visual information, bringing an additional layer of AI interaction to the wearable.
UPI Payments Without Taking Out the Phone
The UPI demonstration is the feature that could make Jio’s glasses particularly relevant to Indian consumers. According to reports from the IMC 2026 demonstration, users can initiate a UPI payment through the camera-equipped glasses without removing their smartphone from their pocket.
That could make wearable payments more convenient for situations where reaching for a phone is inconvenient, although Jio has not yet disclosed how the final payment flow will work, including authentication, transaction confirmation and security controls.
Jio already offers UPI functionality through MyJio, including merchant payments and a Jio UPI handle linked to a user’s bank account. The company’s existing UPI infrastructure could provide a foundation for extending payment interactions to its upcoming wearable ecosystem, although Jio has not publicly detailed the technical architecture behind the glasses demonstration.
AI Could Make Smart Glasses More Useful in India
The UPI feature is part of a broader attempt to make AI wearables useful beyond basic voice commands. A camera-equipped wearable can potentially combine what the user sees with voice-based AI, allowing interactions that are difficult to replicate through conventional smartphone interfaces.
For Jio, this also fits into its wider IMC 2026 positioning around home-grown AI, connectivity and digital services. The company is showcasing technologies across satellite connectivity, autonomous networks, education, enterprise applications, smart homes and AI wearables.
Launch Date and Pricing Are Still Unclear
Jio has not yet released complete specifications or pricing for the smart glasses. Economic Times reported after an IMC 2026 hands-on that the glasses are available in audio-only and camera variants, while specifications have not yet been disclosed.
Other reports indicate that Jio could bring the smart glasses and AI earbuds to market towards the end of 2026, but this should not be treated as a confirmed retail launch date until Jio formally announces it.
The bigger significance of the demonstration is therefore not a confirmed product price or launch schedule, but Jio’s attempt to connect AI, wearables and India’s UPI payment ecosystem. If the company can bring the demonstrated experience to a competitively priced consumer product, smart glasses could become another interface for everyday digital services rather than simply an accessory for voice-based AI.
