India’s Tablet Market Shrinks 3.8% as Buyers Move Upmarket

India's tablet shipments fell 3.8% in Q2 2026, but the Rs 20,000–Rs 30,000 segment grew 45% as buyers showed stronger demand for larger, higher-value devices.

India’s tablet shipments fell 3.8% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, but the decline masks a significant shift in what consumers are buying. The Rs 20,000–Rs 30,000 segment grew 45%, while larger tablets priced above Rs 20,000 gained traction and rising memory costs pushed the market towards higher average selling prices.

    India’s Tablet Market Declines in Q2 2026

India’s tablet market recorded a 3.8% year-on-year decline in shipments during Q2 2026, according to market research cited by Moneycontrol.

The headline decline suggests weaker demand across the category, but the underlying numbers point to a more complicated market. Consumers are increasingly moving towards higher-priced tablets, particularly models with larger displays and more capable hardware.

This means the decline in shipment volumes does not necessarily translate into an equivalent decline in the value of the tablet market.

    Rs 20,000–Rs 30,000 Segment Grows 45%

One of the strongest developments during the quarter was the performance of tablets priced between Rs 20,000 and Rs 30,000.

Shipments in this segment increased 45% year-on-year, indicating that buyers who are still purchasing tablets are showing greater willingness to spend on mid-premium devices.

The shift is important for manufacturers because it changes the focus from simply selling more units to selling higher-value products. Larger displays, better processors, more memory and improved productivity features can all help brands justify higher prices.

    Larger Tablets Gain Traction

Tablets priced above Rs 20,000 with displays larger than 12 inches also gained traction during the quarter.

The trend suggests that buyers are increasingly using tablets as productivity and entertainment devices rather than simply as larger versions of smartphones.

A larger display can make tablets more useful for watching videos, working on documents, attending online meetings and multitasking. For consumers who do not want to buy a laptop for every task, a large-screen tablet can occupy an increasingly useful middle ground.

Memory Costs Are Putting Pressure on Prices

Rising memory costs are another factor affecting the tablet market.

Memory components such as DRAM and NAND storage are important parts of a tablet’s bill of materials. Higher component costs can increase manufacturing expenses and eventually put pressure on retail prices.

That becomes particularly important in India’s price-sensitive tablet market, where a relatively small increase in the final price can push a device into a different consumer segment.

The impact is therefore not limited to the cost of individual components. Manufacturers may also have to adjust configurations, promotional pricing or product positioning to protect margins.

    Domestic Tablet Manufacturing Rises 30%

While shipments declined, domestic tablet manufacturing increased 30% year-on-year, according to the market research cited by Moneycontrol.

The divergence between local manufacturing growth and shipment decline is significant. It suggests that manufacturers are increasing production capacity or local sourcing even as domestic demand remains uneven.

Growing local production could also help strengthen India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem and reduce dependence on imported finished devices over time.

However, higher domestic manufacturing does not automatically mean that consumer prices will fall. Component costs, product mix, import content and the level of localisation all influence the final price.

Consumers Are Buying Fewer but Better Tablets

The most interesting takeaway from the latest data is the shift in the tablet market’s consumer profile.

Overall shipments are declining, but the segments attracting buyers are moving upwards. The 45% growth in the Rs 20,000–Rs 30,000 category and stronger demand for tablets with displays above 12 inches suggest that consumers who remain active in the category are looking for more capable devices.

This could push manufacturers to focus more heavily on premium features rather than competing solely on entry-level pricing.

For buyers, however, higher component costs could make some tablets more expensive during the festive shopping season.

What the Trend Means for Festive Tablet Buyers

The timing is particularly relevant because India’s festive shopping season is underway. Tablets are commonly promoted through discounts, bank offers and exchange programmes during major sales events.

However, the combination of higher memory costs and stronger demand for larger, higher-priced models could limit how aggressively some manufacturers discount newer devices.

Consumers looking for value may therefore find older-generation premium tablets particularly attractive if brands and retailers use the festive period to clear inventory.

The Q2 data ultimately points to a tablet market that is not simply shrinking. Instead, India’s tablet buyers appear to be becoming more selective, with demand shifting towards larger and more expensive devices even as total shipment volumes decline.
