Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has extended its Standalone (SA) 5G network coverage deeper into North Kashmir by commissioning new infrastructure in the Kupwara district. The operator integrated a permanent cell site at Mooldhari within the Bangus Valley while activating high-speed 5G services in Simari, a frontier village in the Karnah Valley. The expansion eliminates long-standing coverage shadows across high-altitude border regions.

Deploying Permanent Telecom Infrastructure at 10,000 Feet

Building and maintaining mobile network infrastructure at high elevations presents severe engineering hurdles. Located at an altitude of nearly 10,000 feet, the Mooldhari site in Bangus Valley required specialized civil planning to withstand harsh winter conditions, heavy snowfall, and difficult terrain.

Previously, geographical isolation and severe seasonal weather restricted communications for local pastoral communities and visiting tourists. The activation of a permanent site provides year-round voice and broadband connectivity across the region, replacing temporary seasonal arrangements.

Bringing 5G Connectivity to Simari Border Village

Located approximately 170 kilometers from Srinagar in the Teetwal region of Karnah Valley, Simari holds unique civic prominence as “India’s Polling Booth No. 1”. Positioned along the Line of Control, the village previously suffered from limited access to modern telecommunications.

Working alongside the Indian Army and regional administrative bodies, Jio completed the site integration to deliver high-throughput, low-latency 5G SA data services directly to border residents and military personnel stationed in forward sectors.

Strategic Value: Digital Access, Tourism, and Defense Support

The arrival of high-speed connectivity introduces tangible practical utilities for the border populace and local administration:

    • Digital Services & E-Governance: Border residents can complete online banking transactions, submit official civil documents, and access central welfare schemes without traveling long distances.
    • Educational Continuity: Local students gain access to digital learning portals, providing educational stability during winter road blockades.
    • Eco-Tourism Growth: Homestays, local transport operators, and eco-tourism ventures in Bangus Valley can manage online bookings and digital UPI payments.
    • Fixed-Wireless Broadband Expansion: Widespread 5G SA coverage enables the deployment of fixed-wireless solutions like the Jio AX3000 WiFi 6 Router, delivering high-speed home broadband without laying physical fiber across mountain passes.

Expert Analysis: Standalone 5G Architecture in Remote Markets

Industry Context: Network intelligence evaluations from independent analyst firms like Opensignal consistently highlight Jio’s 5G availability across India. Building 5G on a Standalone (SA) core rather than anchoring it to legacy 4G infrastructure allows operators to deliver consistent coverage and lower latency across geographically challenging terrains.

With over 250 million active 5G subscribers nationwide, Jio’s focus on high-altitude frontier deployments strengthens its network availability footprint while addressing critical national infrastructure priorities in border corridors.

What This Means For Mobile Users in Kashmir

For local populations, security personnel, and travelers visiting Kupwara district, the rollout provides immediate connectivity benefits:

    1. Dependable Emergency Communications: Enables real-time contact during landslips, extreme weather events, or medical emergencies.
    2. Reliable Travel Connectivity: Visitors traveling through Karnah and Bangus valleys retain uninterrupted navigation and voice services.
    3. High-Speed Home Internet: Local businesses and administrative offices can establish wireless broadband setups for daily digital operations.

Reliance Jio’s network activation across Bangus Valley and Simari represents a major milestone in bridging the digital divide across Kashmir’s frontier zones. By establishing permanent, high-altitude 5G infrastructure at 10,000 feet, the operator strengthens regional digital inclusion while providing vital communication links for local residents, civil administration, and defense forces.
