Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has expanded its telecom presence across North Kashmir by commissioning new infrastructure in two geographically challenging areas of Kupwara district. The operator integrated a permanent cell site at Mooldhari in the high-altitude Bangus Valley while extending commercial 5G services to Simari, a remote border village located in the Karnah Valley near the Line of Control. The expansion aims to bridge long-standing coverage gaps in high-altitude frontier areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Permanent Infrastructure at 10,000 Feet in Bangus Valley

Deploying communications infrastructure in the Bangus Valley presents severe logistical hurdles due to rugged terrain, extreme winter weather, and limited power availability. Located at an elevation of roughly 10,000 feet, the newly activated Mooldhari cell site provides a stable, year-round connectivity footprint for the region.

Previously, seasonal weather disruptions and topographical barriers left visitors and local pastoral communities isolated from mobile networks. The permanent site ensures continuous voice and high-speed data coverage across the meadow and its surrounding transit routes.

5G Connectivity Comes to Simari Border Village

In the Karnah Valley’s Teetwal region, Jio collaborated with the Indian Army to roll out 5G services in Simari. Situated approximately 170 kilometers from Srinagar, Simari holds cultural and civic significance as one of India’s northernmost settlements, frequently referred to as “India’s Polling Booth No. 1”.

Prior to this deployment, physical isolation restricted access to high-speed digital services for residents in Karnah Valley. The deployment of Standalone (SA) 5G architecture ensures reliable voice quality and broadband data throughput for the border community.

Strategic Importance: Socio-Economic and Defense Benefits

The introduction of high-speed connectivity across frontier zones serves multiple operational and civilian requirements:

    • e-Governance and Banking: Residents gain direct access to digital welfare schemes, online banking, and remote administrative tools without traveling to district headquarters.
    • Education Continuity: Students in border villages can access online learning resources during harsh winter months when heavy snowfall restricts road movement.
    • Eco-Tourism Boost: Stable mobile connectivity allows homestay operators and local businesses in Bangus Valley to handle online bookings and digital payments.
    • Operational Coordination: Civil authorities and Indian Army personnel deployed in forward locations receive improved communication links for administrative and security logistics.

Expert Analysis: Frontier Coverage and Network Densification

Industry Context: Building network infrastructure along India’s northern borders requires specialized civil engineering and close coordination with defense authorities. By establishing permanent sites at 10,000 feet, telecom operators ensure strategic border corridors remain integrated into the national digital backbone.

According to industry observers, deploying 5G in low-density, high-altitude terrain yields low immediate ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). However, such rollouts align with broader Universal Service Obligation (USO) directives and national security priorities to eliminate strategic connectivity shadows along international borders.

What This Means For Users and Visitors

For local residents, civil administrators, and tourists traveling through North Kashmir, the new sites deliver immediate practical advantages:

    1. Uninterrupted Travel Connectivity: Tourists visiting Bangus Valley can access real-time navigation, digital payments, and voice communications.
    2. Reliable Emergency Services: Local populations in Karnah Valley gain dependable contact channels during weather emergencies or landslips.
    3. Enhanced Business Tools: Local hospitality ventures can list services on digital travel platforms, driving regional economic growth.

Reliance Jio’s network expansion into Bangus Valley and Simari marks an important milestone in bringing high-speed telecommunications to India’s most remote border sectors. By overcoming severe geographical constraints at 10,000 feet, the operator not only improves daily life for frontier residents but also provides vital digital infrastructure for local administration, tourism, and national security forces.
