Reliance Jio crosses 50 million 5G customers; Provides complimentary 5G services to all users
During the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani provided key details about the development of Jio’s digital services. A notable highlight was the company’s achievement of over 50 million 5G customers, all of whom are being given free access to Jio’s 5G offerings. Ambani commented on the growing trend of postpaid customers with high Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) preferences choosing Jio as their preferred network.
Ambani also discussed the progress of Jio’s 5G coverage, and revealed that the network has increased its presence to 96% of census towns. Although not reaching all corners of these towns, 5G has been launched in one or more parts of these areas. Ambani emphasized that this expansion strategy complements Jio’s 5G rollout as the fastest rollout globally, aiming to cover the whole of India by December, just nine months after launch.
A key figure shared by Ambani indicates that over 85% of operational 5G cells in India are under Jio’s network. He highlighted the rapid pace at which new 5G cells are being integrated into the network – roughly one new cell every 10 seconds. It is estimated to have achieved around one million operational 5G cells within the Jio network by December.
Jio’s 5G deployment is based on its fully in-house developed 5G stack, which marks significant progress in indigenous technological innovation.
Apart from 5G development, Ambani also gave details about Jio’s AirFiber service. While the nature of the service was already known, the AGM provided a concrete launch date. Ambani announced that Jio AirFiber would be introduced on September 19, 2023, on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. The upcoming availability of Jio AirFiber is expected to address a potential market of around 200 million homes and establishments that fall in the high-paying segment.
The AGM showcased Reliance Jio’s momentum in both 5G and broadband services, demonstrating the company’s rapid progress and strategic focus on digital expansion.
