India’s leading telecom operator Reliance Jio continues to dominate in India. While Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are facing losses. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report of May 2021, an increase in the number of subscribers of Reliance Jio has been registered. While the number of customers for Bharti Airtel and Vi has shown a decline. This is the occasion after June 2020, when the number of Reliance Jio has registered an addition for the first time.
Reliance Jio Adds 3+ Million Subscribers While Vi and Airtel Lost 4 Million Users
According to TRAI data, Reliance Jio had 36.64 percent of the wireless subscribers market share, while Airtel’s was 29.60 percent and Vodafone Idea was 23.59 percent and BSNL’s was 9.89 percent. However, Airtel still managed to have the maximum proportion of wireless subscribers which was 97.99 percent while MTNL reported the least number of wireless subscribers.
Jio added 35.54 lakh, mobile users, during the month, raising its subscriber base to 43.12 crores.
Both Airtel and Vodafone Idea have seen a massive subscriber loss in May.
Airtel’s lost 46.13 lakh mobile users and ended the month with a subscriber base of 34.8 crores, according to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for the month of May. Troubled Vodafone Idea’s mobile subscriber base shrunk by 42.8 lakh users in May, to 27.7 crore users.
India’s overall mobile subscriber numbers fell by 62.7 lakh, dragging the total user base down to 117.6 crores in May amid the second severe wave of COVID-19.
Increase in Wireline Subscriber Base
Wireline subscribers increased from 20.36 million at the end of April-21 to 21.66 million at the end of May-21. Net increase in the wireline subscriber base was 1.30 million with a monthly growth rate of 6.40 percent. The share of urban and rural subscribers in total wireline subscribers was 90.93 percent and 9.07 percent respectively at the end of May 2021.
The broadband sector of the market of the top five service providers constituted a 98.80 percent market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of May 2021. These service providers were Reliance Jio with 434.23 million, Airtel with 192.73 million, Vodafone Idea with 119.64 million, BSNL with 22.47 million, and Atria Convergence with 1.87 million. In May 2021, a total of 7.28 million requests were received for mobile number portability.
