Google is changing which Gemini models are available to personal-account users from October 9, with free users losing access to the regular Flash model and AI Plus subscribers losing access to Pro. In India, the change makes the Rs 399, Rs 1,950 and Rs 6,500 paid tiers more important for users who want access to Google’s more capable Gemini models.
What changes for free Gemini users
From October 9, users accessing Gemini without a Google AI subscription will be limited to Google’s Flash-Lite model. Access to the regular Flash and Pro models will no longer be available under the free tier, according to Google’s updated model-availability information.
The change applies to Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts. Google says the rollout will begin for users without an AI subscription on October 9, while AI Plus subscribers will receive an email explaining when the changes take effect for their accounts.
For people who use Gemini occasionally for searches, simple questions, writing assistance or basic AI tasks, the free tier will continue to provide access to Gemini. The main difference is that the most capable models will no longer be part of that free model selection.
AI Plus at Rs 399 loses Pro access
Google AI Plus is the entry-level paid option in India at Rs 399 per month. After the change, Plus subscribers will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash, but will no longer have access to Gemini Pro.
This is an important distinction because paying for AI Plus will not automatically mean access to Google’s highest-capability Gemini model. Users who specifically need Pro will have to move to the higher AI Pro tier.
AI Pro costs Rs 1,950 and keeps Pro access
Google AI Pro is priced at Rs 1,950 per month in India and continues to provide access to Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro models. AI Pro users also get access to Google’s advanced Deep Think capability under the updated structure.
For users who regularly use Gemini for complex research, coding, document work or other demanding tasks, the difference between AI Plus and AI Pro is therefore becoming more significant. The higher-priced plan is positioned as the tier for users who need access to Google’s more capable reasoning models.
AI Ultra remains the top Gemini tier
Google AI Ultra starts at Rs 6,500 per month in India. It retains access to Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro, along with the highest-level features and access associated with Google’s top subscription tier.
For most consumers, however, the more relevant comparison will be between the free tier, AI Plus and AI Pro. The Ultra plan is aimed at users who need substantially higher limits and Google’s most advanced AI benefits.
Gemini plans in India: What you get
| Gemini plan | India price | Model access after October changes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Rs 0 | Flash-Lite |
| Google AI Plus | Rs 399/month | Flash-Lite + Flash |
| Google AI Pro | Rs 1,950/month | Flash-Lite + Flash + Pro |
| Google AI Ultra | Rs 6,500/month | Flash-Lite + Flash + Pro |
The model-access structure is based on Google’s updated availability information, while the India prices are reported by India Today. Availability and limits can vary by account and region.
Google’s compute-based limits are also changing how Gemini is used
The model restriction is not the only part of Google’s current Gemini strategy. Gemini Apps have already moved toward compute-based usage limits, where usage depends on factors such as prompt complexity, the features used, the model and the length of a conversation. Google says the limit refreshes every five hours until the user’s weekly limit is reached.
The current structure gives paid subscribers higher usage limits than users without a Google AI subscription. Reports based on Google’s support documentation describe AI Plus as having twice the standard limit and AI Pro as having four times the standard limit, while Ultra gets substantially higher limits depending on the subscription configuration.
This means users need to look at two separate things when comparing Gemini plans: which models they can access and how much compute-based usage they receive.
What the October 9 change means for Indian users
For free users, the biggest change is straightforward: Gemini will no longer provide the regular Flash and Pro models, leaving Flash-Lite as the available model. Users who want Flash without paying will therefore lose that option from October 9.
For AI Plus subscribers, the change is different. Their Rs 399 subscription will continue to provide Flash-Lite and Flash, but Pro access moves to AI Pro at Rs 1,950 per month. That makes AI Pro substantially more expensive, but it also creates a much clearer separation between Google’s entry-level paid plan and its professional AI offering.
Google’s changes therefore do not mean that Gemini is becoming completely paid in India. The free service remains available, but the model available without a subscription is becoming less capable than the models offered through Google’s paid tiers.
Should you upgrade to a paid Gemini plan?
For someone who uses Gemini mainly for everyday questions, rewriting, summaries and lightweight tasks, the free tier may still be sufficient after October 9. Flash-Lite will remain available, although users who were relying on regular Flash may notice a difference in model access.
AI Plus at Rs 399 becomes the middle option for users who want regular Flash but do not need Pro. AI Pro at Rs 1,950 makes more sense for users who specifically require Pro and higher usage limits, while AI Ultra at Rs 6,500 is aimed at heavy users who want Google’s highest tier of access.
The October 9 change is therefore less about Google removing Gemini for free users and more about moving the boundary between Google’s free, entry-level paid and premium AI models.
