WhatsApp is working on a redesigned bottom navigation bar for Android, giving the app a more floating appearance with rounded corners and clearer separation from the rest of the interface.

The new interface was spotted in development around WhatsApp for Android version 2.26.38.10. Instead of sitting directly against the bottom edge of the screen, the navigation bar is designed as a separate floating element with rounded corners.
The redesign changes the visual presentation rather than the basic navigation structure. WhatsApp’s main sections remain accessible from the bottom of the screen, making it easier for users to switch between different parts of the app.
Chats, Updates, Communities and Calls Remain
The existing Android navigation system moved major WhatsApp sections such as Chats, Communities, Updates and Calls to the bottom of the display. Meta introduced the bottom navigation to make frequently used areas easier to reach with the thumb.
The latest redesign retains that basic approach while giving the navigation area more visual separation. The active section is also designed to be easier to identify, helping users understand which part of WhatsApp they are currently viewing.
Design Looks Closer to WhatsApp on iPhone
The redesigned Android bar takes visual cues from WhatsApp’s navigation design on iOS, particularly its floating, rounded appearance. However, the Android version does not necessarily replicate Apple’s translucent Liquid Glass treatment, and the final design could still change during development.
The new layout has reportedly been observed in both light and dark themes. This suggests WhatsApp is testing the navigation treatment as part of a broader interface refresh rather than simply changing the colour or icon style.
WhatsApp May Make More Changes Before Release
The redesigned navigation bar is not ready for a stable rollout. WABetaInfo currently describes the feature as under development and says it is not yet available for beta testing, while other reports have linked the design to Android beta version 2.26.38.10.
That means the appearance, placement and even the sections shown in the final navigation bar could change before WhatsApp makes it available to a wider group of users.
For now, Android users should not expect to receive the redesigned bar simply by installing the latest public WhatsApp update. There is also no confirmed date for a stable release.
