Airtel Cloud Adds More Enterprise Customers as Manufacturing Demand Grows

Airtel Cloud has reached around 40 enterprise customers within a year of its launch, with manufacturing companies accounting for nearly a quarter of its customer base, highlighting growing demand for India-hosted cloud infrastructure among industrial businesses.

Bharti Airtel’s homegrown cloud platform has continued to expand its enterprise customer base as Indian companies increasingly look for secure, locally hosted infrastructure for mission-critical workloads. According to a PTI report citing people aware of the developments, Airtel Cloud now has around 40 customers, while manufacturing companies make up nearly 25% of the total.

Airtel Cloud Customer Base Reaches Around 40

Airtel Cloud was launched in August 2025 by Airtel’s digital subsidiary Xtelify as a sovereign, telco-grade cloud platform for Indian enterprises. The platform was originally developed to support Airtel’s own large-scale digital operations and has subsequently been offered to external enterprise customers.

The latest customer count represents continued growth from the 33 customers Airtel disclosed during its Q1 FY27 earnings call. Airtel Executive Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal said at the time that the company had added 11 customers during the quarter and that almost all critical services were live on the platform.

The latest figure of around 40 customers, however, comes from sources cited by PTI rather than a fresh official Airtel disclosure. Airtel did not respond to an email from PTI seeking comment on the customer count and the proportion of manufacturing customers.

Manufacturing Accounts for Nearly 25% of Customers

Manufacturing has emerged as one of the more significant customer segments for Airtel Cloud, accounting for nearly 25% of its customer base according to sources cited in the PTI report. Companies operating factories and distributed industrial facilities increasingly need cloud infrastructure for connected equipment, production data, analytics, backup and disaster recovery.

VE Commercial Vehicles is among the manufacturers reported to be using Airtel Cloud. The company has not publicly disclosed the commercial terms or specific workloads associated with the deployment, so the exact scope of its use of the platform remains unclear.

Airtel’s own cloud business material also shows a focus on manufacturing use cases. The company has published a case study involving a large tyre manufacturer that used Airtel Cloud to re-architect production resilience, while its broader manufacturing offering combines cloud, connectivity, private 5G, IoT and cybersecurity capabilities.

Why Manufacturing Needs More Cloud Infrastructure

Manufacturing companies are increasingly operating connected factories where machines, sensors, production systems and enterprise applications generate large amounts of operational data. Cloud infrastructure can provide the computing, storage, backup and disaster-recovery capabilities needed to process and protect that data across multiple locations.

For manufacturers, reliability is also closely connected to business continuity. A disruption affecting production systems, inventory information or factory connectivity can have consequences beyond IT operations, making disaster recovery and data replication important components of industrial technology infrastructure.

Airtel Cloud offers services including automated backup, data replication and disaster recovery, along with connectivity between factories, offices, cloud environments and recovery sites through Airtel’s network. Airtel executives have previously said that simpler offerings such as disaster recovery, backup-as-a-service, storage-as-a-service and video surveillance-as-a-service have been generating customer traction.

Airtel Cloud Focuses on Sovereign Infrastructure

Airtel is positioning its cloud platform around data control and sovereign infrastructure, with the platform hosted in India. This approach is particularly relevant for enterprises handling sensitive operational information and for sectors where data governance, regulatory requirements and security considerations influence cloud deployment decisions.

Airtel says the platform provides cloud infrastructure, connectivity and GenAI-based provisioning while allowing enterprises to retain control over their data and avoid being locked into a single cloud provider. The company describes Airtel Cloud as a telco-grade platform capable of handling very large-scale workloads.

The sovereign-cloud proposition becomes particularly relevant for regulated businesses and public-sector organisations. Airtel’s Gopal Vittal has previously indicated that larger cloud deals are emerging around sovereign-cloud requirements involving sensitive workloads, especially in regulated and PSU environments, where certification requirements are also becoming important.

Airtel Cloud’s Role in Airtel’s Enterprise Strategy

Airtel Cloud is part of a broader expansion of Airtel’s enterprise and digital infrastructure businesses beyond traditional telecom connectivity. The company has been developing cloud, data-centre, cybersecurity, IoT and private 5G capabilities that can be combined with its existing network infrastructure.

This gives Airtel an opportunity to sell integrated technology services to businesses rather than limiting its enterprise offering to connectivity. For manufacturers, for example, cloud infrastructure can be combined with secure network connectivity, private 5G and IoT services for connected factory environments. Airtel’s manufacturing portfolio explicitly targets areas such as smart factory automation, connected supply chains and multi-plant operations.

The strategy also fits into Airtel’s broader investment in digital infrastructure. The company’s FY26 reporting identified Airtel Cloud as one of its new digital growth engines, alongside continued expansion of its data-centre business through Nxtra.

    What the 40-Customer Milestone Shows

The reported 40-customer milestone gives Airtel Cloud a larger base of enterprise deployments only about a year after its commercial launch. However, the latest customer number should be viewed as a source-reported figure rather than an officially confirmed Airtel metric.

The manufacturing share is also notable because it points to demand for cloud infrastructure beyond conventional office applications. Industrial companies have increasingly complex requirements involving production resilience, connected operations, data analytics and secure access across factories, making cloud and connectivity part of the same technology stack.

For Airtel, the next stage will likely involve expanding the number and size of enterprise deployments while building the certifications and capabilities required for more sensitive workloads. Airtel’s own statements indicate that the company sees sovereign cloud as an important opportunity in regulated and public-sector environments, while its existing manufacturing engagements provide another route for expanding Airtel Cloud adoption.

With around 40 customers now reported and manufacturing contributing nearly one-quarter of the base, Airtel Cloud is becoming a more visible part of India’s growing enterprise-cloud market. The platform’s progress also shows how telecom operators are increasingly using their network, data-centre and software capabilities to compete for workloads traditionally served by dedicated cloud providers.
