Airtel anticipates that its NB-IoT technology will play a key role in the utility sector, enabling seamless connection and management of smart meters on a large scale, marked by better coverage, enhanced reliability, and advanced security measures.

Airtel Business, the business-to-business (B2B) division of Bharti Airtel, has unveiled plans to empower Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) with connectivity for over 20 million smart meters. As part of Airtel’s recent expansion into advanced applications including advanced metering infrastructure, meter data management systems, cloud and analytics, the telecom giant aims to provide cutting-edge solutions.

In an official announcement, Airtel revealed its commitment to provide reliable and secure connectivity across AESL’s smart meter deployment through its extensive nationwide communication network. Leveraging NB-IoT, 4G and 2G technologies, Airtel’s smart meter solutions promise real-time connectivity and seamless data transfer between smart meters and headend applications.

Airtel’s IoT platform, ‘Airtel IoT Hub’, enhances the smart metering experience by enabling tracking, monitoring, advanced analytics and diagnostic capabilities. Users receive real-time information and services, giving them greater control over their energy consumption.

Adani Energy Solutions has an order book of over 20 million smart meters from power utilities in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand. Airtel Business (India) emphasized the importance of India’s smart metering program as a key policy reform, positioning smart meters as fundamental enablers for the digitization of the power sector. Airtel anticipates that its NB-IoT technology will play a key role in connecting and managing smart meters at scale, ensuring better coverage, higher reliability and security.

Commenting on the collaboration, Airtel Business (India) said, “We look forward to a long and fruitful association with the Adani Group, which will support them in their efforts to digitalize utilities.”

Adani Energy Solutions highlighted the synergy between its domain expertise in the transmission and distribution (T&D) sector and Airtel’s extensive network and IoT offerings. The collaboration aims to seamlessly deploy Adani’s existing order book, providing real-time consumption data and control to millions of consumers while optimizing efficiency in the distribution network.
